Biological Sciences E-Resources Online Guide

  • Finding articles - Databases are useful to identify articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, chapters in books, reports and reviews. This are also known as Index and Abstract. It will provide citations (the source of the article), abstracts (brief descriptions of the article’s content) or full text articles (the article in its entirety). Review articles from databases summarize the current state of research on a subject by organizing, synthesizing, and critically evaluating the relevant literature written for specialists. The bibliography in a review article is usually exhaustive.
  • Methods for scientific laboratory investigations - also known as Protocols. These are manuals are known for their scope and reliability in providing resources for new as well as tried-and-true methods.
  • Encyclopedias & Dictionaries are a collection of informational articles on any given subject.
  • Handbooks provide find formulae, definitions and or often used as a starting point when researching an unfamiliar field.

Aquatic Science & Fisheries Abstracts A premier database in aquatic sciences covering global developments in the science, technology, and management of marine, freshwater, and brackishwater environments and organisms. From 1971- present
Zoological Record

Covers all aspects of zoology. From 1978-present.

Encyclopedias & Dictionaries Handbooks Description
Encyclopedia of Life Sciences One of the most comprehensive reference source in the biological sciences, it comprises 3,000 specially commissioned, peer-reviewed articles from 5,000 contributors from all over the world. There are over 30,000 internal cross-referenced links between articles for more detail on the specified terms. Updated monthly.
CRCnetBASE

This is a collection of handbooks published by CRC press via the Internet. It is organised into several specialized databases like, FORENSICnetBASE and PHARMACEUTICALnetBASE, just to name a few.

Illustrated Dictionary of Fish and Shellfish, An A CD-ROM contains over 770 commercially important species of fish and shellfish in the international fishing trade, fisheries science and fish biology. Each entry has: a colour illustration, a detailed map of where the species is found, optimum size and weight, catching method and a grading of eating quality. Name of each species is given in 21 languages including the scientific and family names.

Etymological Dictionary of Grasses A CDROM that introduces the terminology of grasses. It is an extensive dictionary of all presently used names and derivations in grass taxonomy, a glossary of terms used in describing grass features, a literature overview of most important references and a list of names of scientists working in this field.
