Major Reference Databases
1. BIOSIS Previews
(1992- ) and Biological Abstracts on CDROM
(1980 - 1992)
These are reference database in the life sciences. It covers original
research reports and reviews in biological and biomedical areas. Coverage
includes traditional areas of biology, such as botany, zoology and microbiology,
as well as related fields such as plant and animal science, agriculture,
pharmacology and ecology. Interdisplinary fields such as biochemistry,
biophysics, and bioengineering are also included.
2. MEDLINE ( via PubMed)
(1966- )
Developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)
at the National Library of Medicine (NLM). PubMed provides access to
over 11 million citations from MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, HealthSTAR, publisher-supplied
citations, and other related databases, with links via the "Linkout"
feature to participating online journals. It also provides access and
links to the molecular biology databases available at The National Center
for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). These databases contain DNA and
protein sequences, 3-D protein structure data, population study data
sets, and assemblies of complete genomes in an integrated system.
3. Science Citation Index
Expanded (in Web of Science from 1988- ) and on CDROM (1980-1987)
The citation indexes are multidisciplinary databases containing citations
of journal articles with author abstracts. It covers leading journals
in a wide range of disciplines. It captures all the references cited
in the articles. Besides using the citation indexes for a literature
search to look for articles on a topic, you can use it to find out which
articles cited an author or another article.
4. SciFinder Scholar
(1907- )
SciFinder Scholar is today's leader in providing the most accurate and
comprehensive chemical and related scientific information. It provides
easy access to the rich and diverse scientific information offered by
the CAS databases such as references from journals and patents, substance
data, and chemical reactions. SciFinder Scholar offers a variety of
pathways and powerful tools to explore CAS databases and MEDLINE too.
How to access the reference database?
1. Point your Web browser to http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg/.
2. Click on Digital Library.
3. Under Browse by Title, click on Indexes and Abstracts.
4. Click on the required reference database in the list shown.
