InfoGate now available for seamless, integrated access to diverse electronic content

We are pleased to inform you that InfoGate is now available for use.  InfoGate is a gateway that offers you seamless, integrated access to diverse electronic content. It allows you to search multiple resources through a single interface. Through this service, you are able to perform simultaneous searches on electronic databases, electronic journals, the NUS Libraries catalog (LINC), and catalogs of other libraries without having to repeat the search strategy from one source to another. In addition, InfoGate is designed to provide a bridge between the citation retrieved and corresponding full text.  It analyzes citation information and provides article-level links to the full text based on the library’s subscriptions. Using this service will save you time and effort.

With the full text linking capabilities you will also find additional links when you are searching the databases directly, e.g. Web of Science and Expanded Academic Index. Even if the database producers do not provide the links to a full text document you may see one link that is provided by this system. Thus making access to the full text documents more efficient.

InfoGate is also very useful if you need to find a few relevant documents quickly. Many research topics are often multi-disciplinary. Relevant resources may appear in resources from various subjects. InfoGate can be used as a preliminary search tool to determine which databases are most useful to your research topic. You can then go into these relevant databases directly to do a more in-depth search.

As InfoGate attempts to search many databases at the same time,  it tries to search only in the fields that are most commonly available in the databases, such as title, author, and subject.  Therefore, it is not able to do special search functions on the databases. For example, you cannot do a citation search in InfoGate the way you do it in Web of Science, or set limits in Biosis Previews. Searching multiple databases also takes a much longer time than searching one database. In view of this, we have set limits to the number of databases that can searched simultaneously and the number of citations that can be retrieved from each database.
