Social Science Research Network (SSRN) Email Abstracts

We are pleased to announce that the Social Science Research Network Email Abstracts are now available to all teaching staff. It comprises abstracts from the: 
1) Accounting Research Network, 
2) Economics Research Network, 
3) Financial Economics Network, 
4) Legal Scholarship Network, and 
5) Management Research Network.
 
If you have Microsoft Outlook installed on your PC, you can browse the SSRN email abstracts:

1) via Internet Explorer
> Go to the NUS Library Homepage 
> Click on 'Digital Library'
> Under 'Browse by Title', select 'Reference Databases'
> Click on 'Continue'
> SSRN email abstracts are listed alphabetically by title

2) via Microsoft Outlook
> Open 'Microsoft Outlook'

Off-campus Book Delivery/Collection Services [10/01]

The Library will be extending an off-campus book delivery/collection services to NUS postgraduate students and part-time bachelor degree programme students with effect from 22 Oct 2001 (Monday) on a trial basis for 3 months. The only charges will be the postal charges as imposed by Singapore Post. Through this service, these students will be able to borrow and return books from their homes or offices. 

To request for this service, please complete the eform available from the Digital Library under 'Electronic Forms for Library Services' for Higher Degree Students and Undergraduates.

New databases available via Digital Library [10/01]

We are pleased to announce that the following databases are now available via the Digital Library:

  1. AGIS : Attorney-General's Information Service
    This is an indexing and abstracting database produced by the AGIS Section of the Lionel Murphy Library, Attorney-General's Department. Over 120 law journals from Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific are indexed. Articles found in major law journals from other countries including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom are selectively indexed for Australian content. Updated monthly.
     
  2. Osiris (via Web)
    OSIRIS provides information about listed companies, banks and insurance companies around the world. It sources from World'Vest Base, Fitch and Thomson Financial Insurance Solutions. The financial data OSIRIS provides include the income statement, balance sheet, cash flow and ratios, ownership, ratings, earnings estimates and stock data of the various companies.

New Databases available via the Digital Library [07/01]

We are pleased to announce that the following databases are available via the Digital Library:

  1. Index to Singapore Acts
    The database comprises an index to all amendments to the Singapore statutes that are in force to date.
     
  2. Index to Singapore Subsidiary Legislation
    Indexes all subsidiary legislation promulgated under the various Singapore acts from 1991 onwards, when the Revised Edition of Subsidiary Legislation of the Republic of Singapore was published.
     
  3. SourceOECD: Statistics
    Contains 24 OECD statistical databases covering data from 1960 onwards. Statistics are grouped under categories such as agricultural, economic, trade, finance and insurance, education, energy, environment and sustainable development, governance, industry and services, national accounts, nuclear energy, science and technology, transition economies and transport.

New Databases in Digital Library 

Comprehensive Clinical Psychology
This is a comprehensive, integrated collection of tertiary reference material for graduates, researchers and practitioners. It comprises 267 thematically arranged chapters, 28,000 references and 37,000 subject index terms. All chapters are in both PDF and HTML formats and there are reference linking to abstracts within ScienceDirect.

Encyclopedia of Life Sciences
One of the most comprehensive reference source in the biological sciences, it comprises 3,000 specially commissioned, peer-reviewed articles from 5,000 contributors from all over the world. There are over 30,000 internal cross-referenced links between articles for more detail on the specified terms. The encyclopedia is updated monthly.

Grove Dictionary of Art
The Grove Dictionary of Art Online provides web access to the entire text of the Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols.) with constant additions of new material and updates to the text plus extensive image links to galleries and museums around the world. The dictionary has more than 45,000 articles with cross reference links between the articles.

New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd ed.
The preeminent encyclopedia of music in the English language the New Grove II has over 29,000 articles from over 6,000 contributors from 98 countries. It offers notated musical examples, internal cross-referencing and links to digital sound and illustrations. The encyclopedia is updated quarterly.

New Grove Dictionary of Opera
The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, with more than 11,000 articles, is the definitive guide to opera. The dictionary covers over 1,800 operas from late 16th century to the present. It also includes composers, singers, and directors. It is integrated online into grovemusic.com.

New CD-ROMs available at Central Library 

We are pleased to announce that the following CD-ROMs are now available at the Central Library Information Desk. 

Croner's Construction Risk Assessment 
Electronic version of the loose-leaf publication Croner's construction risk assessment. Produced by Croner Publications, it is updated semiannually. It covers all relevant legislation plus a description of the different techniques used to carry out risk assessments and includes over 40 template risk assessment records dealing with the most hazardous construction activities. Print version also available in the Central Library.

The GEE Planning Factbook
Electronic version of the looseleaf manual of the same name. Produced by GEE Publishing Ltd, it is updated three times annually with two bulletins. The Factbook covers a wide range of issues pertinent to urban or environmental planning, such as zoning, highway and water industry acts, building and conservation laws, planning applications and appeals, and compensation and tax issues. The laws, statutes and acts are specific to England and Wales.

Australian Standards and other products - Catalogue January 2001
An online catalogue for Australian and Joint Australian/New Zealand standards. The January 2001 edition has been kindly donated by the Standards Association of Australia. The CD-ROM links to the Standards Australia website which allows users to purchase - using a credit card - standards from the Standards Association of Australia. Also, 95% of their drafts of and amendments to standards can be viewed free of charge. There is an equivalency index in the catalogue which allows users to find the ISO and/or BS equivalent of the Australian standards.

Vacation Reading Lists for 2001 is now available

We are pleased to announce that the Vacation Reading Lists for 2001 is now available. The reading lists are:

  1. Booker Prize Winners 1990-2000 
  2. Nobel Literature Laureates 1990-2000 
  3. Non-Fiction List, which includes topics from anecdotes and humour to fashion and jewelry, from globalisation to popular culture and travel.

Loan entitlement and online renewal

Loan entitlement
The NUS Library is pleased to announce that w.e.f. 1 April 2001, the loan entitlement for staff and students has been increased to: 

Undergraduates 10 books 
Honours & Postgraduates 15 books 
Academic staff 40 books 
Non-Academic staff  10 books 

The loan entitlement for corporate members (Scheme A & Scheme B) has been increased to 10 books.

Online renewal
NUS academic staff members will be able to renew books online 3 times, and renew once online for periodicals kept at the closed stacks. All other categories of library members (including external personal & corporate members) will be able to renew books online 2 times.

New databases available via the Digital Library 

We are pleased to announce that the following databases are now available online through our Digital Library: 

Amadeus
A financial database of 4 million European companies which provides up to 10 years of detailed financial information comprising balance sheet items and profit and loss account items and ratios. The descriptive information includes official national identification number, address, telephone, fax, website, legal form, year of incorporation, senior managers, auditors, number of employees, quoted/unquoted indicator, industry and activity codes and, when available, a trade description in the local language and English. 

Asian Business (via Proquest)
A full-text database that contains articles from Asian business journals such as Asian Business, Business Korea, China Business Review, East Asian Economic Review, etc.

Bankscope
A financial database of Asian banks. It contains information on ownership (shareholders and banking subsidiaries), has up to 8 years of detailed financial information and ratings reports.

Consumer Lifestyles (via Global Market Information Database)
Another module of Global Market Information Database which includes reports on consumer decision making and purchasing habits of consumers.

EIU Citydata
Provides business pricing information on 160 products and services across 123 cities in 79 countries. Prices range from the average electricity bill of a local family to the cost of office and industrial rents in cities worldwide. 

EIU CountryIndicators
Covering 60 major markets worldwide, EIU CountryIndicators includes historic and 5 years of forecast data on industries, demographics, consumption, average wages, income levels, market size, infrastructure and the business environment. It provides a picture of market size and growth potential. 

Market Analysis (via Global Market Information Database)
This is a module of Global Market Information Database which covers market research reports of global consumer markets produced by Euromonitor.

We are pleased to announce that the SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts on the Web) is now available online through our Digital Library.

To access SciFinder Scholar you will need to download and install the SciFinder Scholar software to your PC or laptop. After installation, you can either:

Academic Universe 

Academic Universe from Lexis-Nexis provides access to nearly 6,000 titles in news, business and legal information, many of them in full-text. It includes company financial information, industry and market news, Straits Time, Business Time and other international newspapers, wire services, magazines and trade journals, U.S. federal and state case law, accounting information, medical news and abstracts, law reviews, and state and country profiles. News information is updated daily and wire services several times a day.

Aquatic Science and Fisheries Abstracts (on Silver Platter) 

ASFA is the premier database in aquatic sciences, providing access to global developments in the science, technology, and management of marine, freshwater, and brackishwater environments and organisms. About 36,000 records are added annually. ASFA is available on the SilverPlatter platform and is linked to full-text journals.

Food Science & Technology Abstracts (on Silver Platter) 

FSTA is designed to meet the needs of those looking for fast and efficient access to the world's literature for the and drinks sector. It covers every aspect of food science, food products, and food packaging for all commodities. FSTA contains information from scientific journals as well as information from patents, books, conference proceedings, reports, pamphlets, and legislation in more than 40 languages. All abstracts are in English. More than 20,000 records are added annually. FSTA is available on the SilverPlatter platform and is linked to full-text journals.

Lexis.Com 
Lexis.Com is the premier product of Lexis-Nexis. It provides access to more than 30,000 titles in legal and business information including case law and statutes from U.S., U.K., Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, financial data of publicly listed companies in major stock exchanges, and the world's leading news and business sources such as Straits Times (from January 1992), Business Times (from May 1992), New York Times, Times & Sunday Times (UK), Washington Post, Financial Times, South China Morning Post, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, and various wire services.
