How to Search ScienceDirect databases : To Begin
In the Database form, at ScienceDirect Navigators, click on the database that you wish to search on only.
To select multiple databases, hold down the Ctrl key and click each item.
Click on Journals to use the Journal search form to locate articles from ScienceDirect full-text collection
Click on Abstracts Database to locate articles citations from the abstracts database.
Click on Web for a form, to locate science-relevant Web sites and pages. You may restrict your search to one or more specific subject area at the subject list on the form.
For a literature search in a reference resource, click on Reference Works.
For a literature search in science-relevant Web sites and pages, restricting to specific subject areas, click on Scirus.
Click on
to return to the fresh search screen.
To keep a record of all your current searches, click on Search History - Turn ON.
To save queries for future use, use the Save Query at search results display.

for the online help that gives many good examples on techniques of search formulae, special characters and numeric values.
