How to search databases

ISI Web of Knowledge

The Web of Science databases are popularly used as they index a wide range of journals and the citing references found are journal articles.

NUS Library subscribes to its three databases from 1980- : Arts & Humanities Citation Index; Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index.

The is a feature specially for finding citing references.

It also enables you to eliminate self-citation.

Here is an example on how to locate citing reference for patents documents:
"R.H. Hall and J.G. Xu , Rapid and sensitive detection of O157:H7 and other enterohemorrhagic E. coli, United States Patent, May 26, 1998. Patent number 5,756,293 (1998)." Click here for an example of searching citing references for journal articles.

Enter the first author name and patent document number as shown. If the publications or documents (eg patents) are not indexed in Web of Science databases, you can only a search by first author in the cited reference search feature.

Click on Search and the select the results as shown and click on .

Next would be a list of journal articles that have cited the patent document US 5756293.

Click on the first record, then Cited references will give a list of references cited by this record.
