Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Sociological Abstracts, 1963-
Librarians' take: Major resource for Sociology and related disciplines. Includes citations from journals, conference papers, books and dissertations. Database thesaurus eases searching and Advanced Search features are user-friendly.

Social Sciences Citation Index (via Web of Science), 1980-
Librarian's take: A popular index to the journal literature of Social Sciences. Includes  articles that cite the displayed article, related articles and in some cases, full text. Frequent updates makes it a good source for very recent information.

Social Sciences Abstracts 1983-
A bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles from a wide range of social sciences journals. Covers the latest concepts, trends, opinions, theories, and methods from both applied and theoretical aspects of the social sciences.

International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, 1951-
IBSS’s main focus is on the 4 core social science subjects of Anthropology, Economics, Politics and Sociology.

PERIND, 1980-
Librarian's take: Very useful index to journal articles, book reviews, book chapters and conference papers relating to Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and ASEAN. Includes materials not indexed by other databases. Excellent for Area and Social Studies.

Communication & Mass Media Complete (CMMC), 1920-
Librarian's take: A good database for research in communication, media studies and journalism research.

Expanded Academic ASAP, 1980-
Provides indexed and full-text articles from sources covering rather wide ranging sources in Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Science and Technology.

The Men's Bibliography
This online bibliography, created and maintained by Michael Flood provides access to over 30 major categories on men and masculinities. A reputable business information resource that allows searching for timely news articles from major national and international newspapers, trade journals, and wires, including The Wall Street Journal and The Economist.

LexisNexis Academic (E-Resource)
Provides full text of hundreds of news sources including newspapers, magazines, and newsletters. Pretty good about having boxes to fill in, to help you in searching.

Press Clippings
