Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

INSPEC
Librarian's take: The most important database in physics, electronics, computing, control engineering and information technology. It covers journals and conference proceedings. It is hyperlinked to full-text journals of IOP, AIP, APS, and others. From 1969 - present.

Science Citation Index Expanded
Librarian's take: A significant multi-disciplinary index to scientific journals. It is unique for its citation index and related record search capability. From 1980 - present.

Scopus
A multi-disciplinary index covering life sciences, physical sciences, health sciences, social sciences and business. It indexes journals, conference proceedings, trade publications and quality web sources with links to full text for some records. It allows citation tracking and a researcher can find out how many times a particular article has been cited.

SPIE digital library
An extensive resource covering optics, photonics and imaging engineering with access to more than 260,000 technical papers from SPIE journals and selective Conference Proceedings from 1990 to the present. More than 17,000 new technical papers are added annually. SPIE collaborated with the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to develop the digital library which is being hosted on AIP's Scitation platform. SPIE records are also included in AIP’s SPIN database.

Solid State and Superconductivity Abstracts
Librarian's take: Global coverage on all aspects of theory, production, and application of solid state materials and devices and high- and low-temperature superconductivity technology. It includes topics on phase, crystal, and mechanical properties of solids, optical and dielectric properties, conductive and magnetic properties, exotic electronic structure and energy gaps, SQUIDs, impurity effects, flux structures and critical current, ceramics, twinning phenomena. Dictionary of Pure and Applied Physics
Librarian's take: Authored by eminent scientists from around the world, offers concise, authoritative definitions of more than 3,000 terms covering a range of pure and applied disciplines such as acoustics biophysics, communications electricity electronics, geometrical optics, low-temperature physics, magnetism, medical and physics physical optics.

Handbooks

Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
Librarian's take: One of the most popular handbooks on chemical and physical data. It also has mathematical tables, sources of critical data, chemical nomenclature, symbols, and terminology.

Tables of physical and chemical constants
Librarian's take: An excellent reference book covers a wide range of physical and chemical data, units and fundamental constants. The text is grouped into sections on general physics, chemistry, atomic and nuclear physics, and miscellaneous engineering data. Extensive tables are supplemented by brief explanatory text.

Handbook of Nanoscience, Engineering, & Technology
Librarian's take: It provides comprehensive information and references for nanoscale structures, devices, and systems, molecular technology and nanoelectromechanical theory, and promises to become a standard reference for the field.

CRCnetBASE
Librarian's take: This is a collection of handbooks published by CRC press via the Internet. It is organised into several specialized databases like MATERIALSnetBASE, NANOnetBASE, CHEMnetBASE, just to name a few.

Favorite Mathematical Constants
Very nice and useful list of mathematical constants with supporting essays and references. Maintained by Steven Finch, Research and Development Team, MathSoft, Inc.

Conversion Factors
The following list provides the conversion relationship between U.S. customary units (e.g. inch and miles) and SI (International System ) units. By the Washington State Department of Transportation.

NIST Fundamental Physical Constants
CODATA Internationally recommended values of the fundamental physical constants.

Periodic Table of Elements - X-ray properties
A clickable table of elements. This table provides various x-ray properties for each element and it has also a script for calculating x-ray cross sections for a give energy.

Atomic Spectroscopic Database (from NIST)
This database provides access and search capability for critically evaluated data on atomic energy levels, wavelengths, and transition probabilities that are reasonably up-to-date. The Atomic Energy Levels Data Center and Data Center on Atomic Transition Probabilities and Line Shapes have carried out these critical compilations.

ParticleAdventure.org : A Tour of the Inner Workings of the Atom and the Tools for Discovery
The Particle Adventure is an award-winning site that introduces the theory of fundamental particles and forces, called the Standard Model. It also explores the experimental evidence and the reasons physicists want to go beyond this theory. Available in English, Spanish and French. Sponsored by the Particle Data Group, with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.

PhysLink, a site that links you to the latest news from various physics institutions and societies, reviews of science software, images of physicists, quotations, cartoons and physics humour, etc.

The Basics of MRI, by Dr. Joseph P. Hornak. This is an online tutorial explains the physics behind magnetic resonance images and the mathematics of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. It includes a section on glossary and symbols.


Physics demonstrations online
Applets Gallery
Java applets that demonstrate physics and math concepts. By Greg Egan.

Electromagnetism in animation
This site teaches electromagnetism using animations. It has video clips showing magnetic field line billowing out from charged objects and current-carrying wires. Experiements showing Faraday's Law, radiation, electrostatics and magnetostatics. Very cool images. Produced by Professors John Belcher and Stanislaw Olbert and Mark Bessette at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Physics 2000
Physics 2000 relies heavily on the use of interactive "applets to explain physics to a wide audience. It uses cartoon characters to explain the physics and students can set in motion or adjust these clever Java "experiments".

Physics applet by the Department of Physics, University of Oregon, is a collection of Java applet which explains physics, astronomy and environmental sciences. This is an interactive site with Java "experiments".

U.C. Berkeley Physics Lecture Demonstrations
This site contains many of the old, classic, well-known favorite, as a well as new, physics demonstrations. Produced by the University of California Physics Department at Berkeleys for their undergraduates. Subject includes from astronomy to magnetism to waves.


Biography

Contributions of 20th Century Women in High Energy Physics
This is an archive of more than 75 citations of 20th century women who have made original and important contributions to physics. The citations describe briefly and document major scientific contributions and some biographical information mainly pertaining to the scientific lives of the women.

Emilio Segrè Visual Archives
A collection of some 25,000 historical photographs, slides, lithographs, engravings, and other visual materials on American physicists and astronomers of the twentieth century, as well as many scientists in Europe and elsewhere, in other fields related to physics, and in earlier times. This is part of the Niels Bohr Library of the Center for History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics.

Powder Diffraction file CDROM
A collection of single-phase X-ray powder diffraction patterns in the form of tables of interplanar spacing (d) and relative intensities (Int) and chemical name and formula as well as mineral names. In addition, Miller indices, cell data and phyical properties are listed, together with references for source information, where such data are available.

Wiley Registry of Mass Spectral Data (7th ed.)
This mass spectrometry reference library contains about 390,000 spectra (approximately 315,000 unique compounds). It displays spectral information (Chemical names, mass spectra, chemical structures, etc.). Allows Name prefix and parametric search (molecular weight, CAS number, chemical formula, peak mass, name fragment, etc.)
