Databases
Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports, and reviews.
SciFinder
Scholar
The most important database in chemistry. Contains references back to 1900
to research published in journals, patents, books, theses, conference
proceedings, etc. Covers many scientific subjects, chemistry and the life
sciences including biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, medicine, and
related disciplines. It also offers chemical reaction and structure
searching.

Web of Science: Science Citation Index Expanded
A significant multi-disciplinary index to scientific journals. It is unique
for its citation index and related record search capability. It has links to
full-text journals subscribed by NUS Libraries. From 1980 - present.

ChemVillage
Features access to the chemistry and chemical engineering content including:
Chimica,
Chemical Business NewsBase, CRC handbooks including
CHEMnetBASE,
ENVIROnetBASE,
Combined Chemical Dictionary,
Dictionary of
Commonly Cited Compounds,
Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Polymers: a
properties database and Properties of Organic Compounds. Patents via U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office and esp@cenet and Scirus.
Food Science and Technology Abstracts
It covers every aspect of food science, food products, and food packaging
for all commodities. FSTA contains information from scientific journals as
well as information from patents, books, conference proceedings, reports,
pamphlets, and legislation.

References Sources
This is a select list of reference sources that give background information
including broad overview, definitions, key issues, major dates or events,
keywords and bibliographies.
Dictionaries
Combined Chemical
Dictionary
It consists of :
Dictionary of Commonly Cited Compounds (also
included in CCD)
Dictionary of Drugs (Formerly Pharmasource; also
included in CCD)
Dictionary of Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds
(also included in CCD)
Dictionary of Natural Products (also included in
CCD)
Dictionary of Organic Compounds (also included in
CCD)
Merck Index
Contains monographs describing significant chemicals, drugs, and
biological substances.
Property of Organic Compounds
This is a database
containing over 29,000 of the most commonly sought organic compounds,
featuring physical data, spectral data, and structures.
Encyclopedias
Encyclopedia of
Inorganic Chemistry
It encompasses the whole of inorganic chemistry, including Bioinorganic
Chemistry, Physical and Theoretical Methods, Organometallic Chemistry, Solid
State Chemistry, Main Group Elements, Transition Metals.
Kirk-Othmer
Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology
Describes the theory and practice of chemical engineering, the industrial
production and uses of chemical materials, and basic subjects of chemistry.
Ullman's Encyclopedia
of Industrial Chemistry
Subject coverage includes chemical engineering, industrial safety, and
analytical methods.
Handbooks
CHEMnetbase
Consists of chemical information from Combined Chemical Dictionary (CCD);
the Handbook of Chemistry & Physics; Polymers: A Property Database;
Properties of Organic Compounds.
Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
Provides data on properties of inorganic and organic compounds including:
Physical Properties of Inorganic Compounds; Enthalpy of Fusion; Bond
Dissociation Energies; Table of the Isotopes; Inorganic Ion and Ligand
Nomenclature; Chemical Carcinogens; and Global Temperature Trends.
Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
MSDS-CCOHS
Comprises approximately 120,000 MSDS from 600 North American manufacturers and
suppliers. Records contain information such as: chemical and physical
properties, health hazards, first aid recommendations, personal protection,
fire and reactivity data, spill and disposal procedures, storage and
handling.
Spectra
Electronic Handbook of Infrared and Raman Spectra of Inorganic Compounds and
Organic Salts.
It provides an essential information resource for industrial chemists and
researchers who require both a spectral database and specific routines for
spectrum analysis. It is able to undertake spectra analog searches to
identify unknown entities and provide extensive reference information on
spectral methods and conditions.
Powder Diffraction
File CDROM (PDF-4+ 2008)
A collection of single-phase X-ray powder diffraction patterns in the
form of tables of interplanar spacing (d) and relative intensities (Int) and
chemical name and formula as well as mineral names. In addition, Miller
indices, cell data and physical properties are listed, together with
references for source information, where such data are available.
PDF-4+(2008) search guide. Search using :
Periodic Table; Elements;
Names; References;
Structures; Miscellaneous;
SIeve+ (Intensity & d-spacing)
Proton and Carbon NMR Spectra of Polymers
(5th Edition)
Provides information on polymer microstructure or fine structure, which
results from normal and abnormal addition modes, arising from secondary
reactions, as well as tacticity or stereochemical arrangement of monomer
units in the main chain of the skeleton.
