This subject guide covers resources available at the NUS Libraries. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in Music.

Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Classical Scores Library

Librarian's take: Has the complete catalog of Boosey & Hawkes and selected material from University Music Edition microfilm series. Extensive list of works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Handel, Lassus, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Palestrina, Rameau, Schubert, etc.

 

International Index to Music Periodicals Full Text

Librarian's take: A music journal resource with more than half a million indexed articles, plus detailed abstracts and full text from 1874 to current, covering the scholarly to the popular.

Librarian's take: Covering all styles and genres of music, The Music Index duly cites book reviews, obituaries, new periodicals, and news and articles about music, musicians, and the music industry.

Naxos Music Library

Librarian's take: Naxos Music Library is the most comprehensive collection of classical music available online. It includes the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues of over 165,000 tracks, including Classical music, Jazz, World, and Folk music . Whilst listening, notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database can also be read.

Oxford Music Online


Librarian's take: Full-text search with advanced capabilities and over 3000 links to related sites, including sound archives and illustrations with musical examples.

NUS Theses

Music students do not submit theses. Hence, there are no theses kept at the Music Library.

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Database (PQDT) (E-Resource)
A database of dissertations and theses records from around the world.  Provides 24 page previews of selected dissertations and theses in natural language searching.

Index to Theses with Abstracts accepted for Higher Degrees by the Universities of Great Britain and Ireland (E-Resource)

International Computer Music Association
The Association serves composers, engineers, researchers and musicians who are interested in the integration of music and technology.

Music Publishers' Association
The Association exists to safeguard and improve the business and legal environment within which its members are operating.

Society for Music Theory
The Society publishes two journals, Music Theory Spectrum and Music Theory Online and works to increase the diversity of the discipline. This is to promote fruitful exchanges between music theorists, musicologists, performers, and scholars in other fields.

A source for all kinds of information about orchestras and classical music.

Factiva (E-Resource)
A reputable business information resource that allows searching for timely news articles from major national and international newspapers, trade journals, and wires, including The Wall Street Journal and The Economist.

LexisNexis Academic (E-Resource)
Provides full text of hundreds of news sources including newspapers, magazines, and newsletters.

Press Clippings
Located in the Singapore - Malaysia Collection, Central Library.  A useful source for topical and current information that may  not be available in journals or books. Articles on Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and ASEAN from The Straits Times and Business Times are arranged by broad subjects.
