Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

PubMed
Librarian's take: PubMed is p
roduced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine for access to MEDLINE, a biomedical bibliographic database and some life sciences journals. It is the best database to find dental articles as MEDLINE has extensive indexing of over 700 dentistry journals. The database is updated daily and can be searched back to 1950.

The Cochrane Library (via Wiley Interscience)
Librarian's take: A premier resource for information on evidence based healthcare, the Cochrane Library contains the following databases; all of which can be searched simultaneously. Click Browse Topics and Scroll down to Oral Health Group or search the database using keywords and combining sets.

Science Citation Index Expanded (via Web of Science), 1980-
The
Science Citation Index Expanded is a multidisciplinary index to journal literature of the sciences. It is one of the three databases in Web of Science; the other two being Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Science Citation Index Expanded indexes about 57 journals on dentistry, oral surgery and medicine; many of which are top tier journals. All three databases are searchable simultaneously by keyword or by works that have been cited by other publications.

Statistics

UK Office for National Statistics (ONS)
The site provides access to UK statistics on dental care provided, and the dental health of adults and children.

US NCHS FastStats A-Z - Oral and Dental Health
Provides access to US oral health data. Health Statistics about percent of persons who visited a dentist in the past year.

US National Oral Health Surveillance System
Provides estimates for dental visits in the past year, teeth cleanings in the past year, complete tooth loss among elders, and fluoridation status in the United States.  Other oral health indicators included in the system are caries experience, untreated caries, dental sealants and oral cancer.

American Dental Association
Provides access to CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines for infection control in dental health care settings.

American Association of Endodontists
Contains various dental guidelines and position statements including American Heart Association's antibiotic prophylaxis.

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
This site has an extensive collection of oral health Policies, and clinical guidelines.

American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Guidelines
Guidelines on the management of patients with periodontal diseases and the in-office use of conscious sedation in periodontics. The site also includes AAP parameters of care.

Canadian Collaboration on Clinical Practice Guidelines in Dentistry (CCCD)
Provided by the Canadian Dental Association, the CCCD contains guidelines to facilitate evidence-based practice.

FDI World Dental Federation Guidelines database
Contains national and international guidelines, statements, position papers, proceedings and meta-analyses relating to oral health.

Ministry of Health, Singapore  
Provides access to the guidelines on clinical practice, infectious diseases, ethics and health education materials in Singapore.
