Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Philosopher's Index, 1940-
The Philosopher's Index is the most important bibliographical and abstracting service for philosophy research. Philosophy and related interdisciplinary fields such as history, theology, law and languages are indexed. Includes journals and books in English are indexed. Selected books are also reviewed.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index (via Web of Science), 1980-
Librarian's take: A good starting point for searching full-text journal articles in the humanities.

Expanded Academic ASAP Int'l Ed, 1980-
Librarian's take: This database offers a vast collection of indexed and full-text content from various academic journals. Another good starting point for research in the humanities.

Australian Digital Theses Database (E-Resource)
A database that picks up dissertations and theses submitted to Australian and New Zealand universities. Abstracts of theses are available
online. Searching is by fiels such as institutions, title of thesis, author, subject words, School or Department and date.

Index to Theses with Abstracts accepted for Higher Degrees by the Universities of Great Britain and Ireland (E-Resource)
The Index to Theses with Abstracts includes dissertations and theses accepted for higher degrees by the Universities of Great Britain and Ireland. This comprehensive listing lists theses from as far back as 1716.

Proquest Dissertations and Theses database (PQDT) (E-Resource)
This database contains citations and abstracts of dissertations and theses submitted to North American, European and Australian universities. Abstarcts are provided for records from 1980. Searching is using natural language.

Dictionary of the Philosophy of Mind
This dictionary is intended as a free resource for all those interested in the philosophy of mind.

Episteme Links
This site includes over 19,000 categorized links to philosophy resources on the Internet and has several additional features. Online since early 1997, this site is free to use. Begin browsing the site by using the Philosophers or Topics links or by using the link category or special feature links.

Guide to Philosophy on the Internet

Peter Suber's guide is still a useful starting point for research though it has not been updated since 2003.

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Reference tool founded in 1995 and developed by James Fieser (general editor) for the purpose of providing detailed scholarly information on all areas of philosophy.  Articles include adaptations from public domain sources, adaptations written by the editor for classroom purposes and original contributions by professional philosophers.

Intute : Arts and Humanities
Originally the Humbul Humanities Hub. Service of the Resource Discovery Network providing access to web resources for education and research that are selected and evaluated by a network of subject specialists. Browse by subject.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Established collaborative work by reputable scholars covering philosophy and related disciplines. This free resource is updated infrequently.
