Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Engineering Village 2 (EV 2)
Engineering Village 2 (EV2) is the most important Engineering research database. It has five sub databases: Compendex, Inspec, National Technical Information Service (NTIS), Chimica and Chemical Business NewsBase (CBNB) which can be searched individually or together (more on each database below). It has over 16 million records, some of which have links to full text. EV2 covers journals, conference proceedings, unclassified government reports, and more. It also has links to useful sites like the European Patent Office, Esp@cenet and scientific research tool, Scirus.

Compendex (over 10 million records, 1969-) indexes articles from over 5,600 journals and conference proceedings. It includes millions of bibliographic citations and abstracts from thousands of engineering journals and conference proceedings. Over 190 disciplines in the all fields of engineering, as well as related fields in science and management are covered.

Inspec (8 million records, 1969-) is produced by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). It indexes 3,500 journals and 1,500 conference proceedings. Topics covered are physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering, computers and computing, IT, material science, biomedical technology, etc.

NTIS (over 2 million records, 1899- ) is a source of reports (including unclassified ones) from US and international government agencies like NASA, the United States Departments of Energy and Defense, the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology and the Japan Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

CBNB (1985- ) provides worldwide chemical business news and information. Sources include 300 core trade journals, newspapers, company newsletters/interim and annual reports, books, market research reports, and press releases.

Chimica (1970- ) covers 600 journals on chemistry and chemical engineering, with emphasis on applied and analytical chemistry. Other topics are physical chemistry, health and safety, organic and inorganic chemistry, and materials science.

ENGnetBASE : Engineering Handbooks Online
This database offers a digital collection of selected full text CRC Press/Taylor & Francis engineering handbooks and reference titles. Additionally, allows you to rapidly search the data, facts, figures, graphs, equations, illustrations,
and summaries in these reference books. They can be searched individually or simultaneously. NUS staff and students can access the databases via the Library Portal. Click E-Resources > E-Books > By publisher > CRC Press > List Subscribed
Titles.

SciFinder Scholar
Covers chemical and life sciences research published in journals, patents, books, theses, conference proceedings, etc. Provides access to several Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) databases, including Chemical Abstracts (1967-), Registry, CASREACT, CHEMLIST, CHEMCAT Medline, OldMedline. Has more than 19 million citations to the chemistry literature. More than 35 million chemical substances can be searched by chemical name, chemical structure, CAS Registry Numbers, formula. Offers chemical reaction searching. Some records have links to full text.

Science Direct
SD is One of the largest online collections of published scientific research in the world. Produced by Elsevier it contains over 8.5 million articles from over 2000 journals as well as 40 reference works and numerous book series and handbook series.  [ISI Web of Knowledge]

Web of Science [ISI Web of Knowledge]
An online academic database provided by Thomson Scientific. It provides access to five databases: Science Citation Index (SCI), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI), Index Chemicus, and Current Chemical Reactions. WoS covers about 8,700 leading journals of science, technology, social sciences, arts, and humanities.
