Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Engineering Village 2 (EV 2)
Engineering Village 2 (EV2) is the most comprehensive interdisciplinary Engineering database. Databases available are, Chimica, Chemical Business NewsBase (CBNB), Compendex, Inspec, National Technical Information Service (NTIS), etc. It has over 16 million records, some of which have links to full text. EV2 covers journals, conference proceedings, unclassified government reports, and more.

ENGnetBASE : Engineering Handbooks Online
ENGnetBASE is one of the most important Engineering handbook databases in CRCnetBASE. It contains a compilation of essential Engineering information, including data, facts, figures, graphs, equations, illustrations and charts. This database covers handbooks for all disciplines of Engineering, incorporating the subdivisions namely CivilENGINEERINGnetBASE, ElectricalENGINEERINGnetBASE, MechanicalENGINEERINGnetBASE and TELECOMMUNICATIONnetBASE.

For a complete list of subscribed CRCnetBASE handbook databases click here or click E-Resources > E-Books > By publisher > CRC Press > List Subscribed Titles.

Geobase
Geobase is a unique multidisciplinary bibliographic information and abstracting database for Development Studies, Earth Sciences, Ecology, Geomechanics, Human Geography & Oceanography. It provides current coverage of almost 2,000 international journals (including both peer-reviewed titles and trade publications) and provides archival coverage of several thousand additional journal titles and books. It contains over 1.4 million records from 1980 to present, with more than 100,000 citations and abstracts added annually. Ninety-nine percent of entries in Geobase include English abstracts.

PubMed
PubMed is a free resource that lets you search millions of journal citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and preclinical sciences. PubMed provides links to full text articles and other related resources and includes access to MEDLINE and to citations for selected articles in life science journals not included in MEDLINE. MEDLINE covers biomedicine and health, biology, environmental science, marine biology, plant and animal science, behavioral sciences, chemical sciences, biophysics and bioengineering.

SciFinder Scholar (SFS)
SciFinder Scholar (SFS) is a research discovery tool that allows students and faculty to access journal articles, books, theses, conference proceedings and patent documents in many scientific disciplines, including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and more from 1907 to the present. It provides search interface for access to Chemical Abstracts online. Chemical Abstracts covers the published scientific research in chemistry, and offers searching by author name, research topic, substance identifier, chemical structure, or chemical reaction. Now includes the Substructure Module (SSM). It also provides full-text documents and links to electronic patent documents from the USPTO, esp@cenet, and MicroPatent®

Library’s take: SciFinder Scholar includes the abstracts for articles in more than 10,000 journals, chiefly in chemistry. It is useful for materials research and for energy research. Coverage goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. (1 seat limit)

Scopus
Has 37 million records from over 16000 journals, including trade journals. Covers life sciences, physical sciences, health sciences, social sciences and business. Indexes journals, conference proceedings, and quality web sources. Some records have links to full text. It does citation tracking. A researcher can find out how many times a particular article has been cited.

Water Resources Abstracts (via CSA Illumina)
Provides summaries of the world's technical and scientific literature on water-related topics covering the characteristics, conservation, control, pollution, treatment, use and management of water resources. Abstracts are from journals, books, conference proceedings, technical reports, legal and government publications. Over 1200 journals covered.
