Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Construction InfoNet
Construction InfoNet contains the latest information and statistics on Singapore's construction industry by the BCA (Building and Construction Authority). This database provides quick & regular updates on: Quarterly review of construction industry; Weekly construction project listing; Singapore construction prospects; Tender Price Index (TPI); Construction GDP and productivity; Material price indices for fluctuation clause; Value of contracts awarded (Demand); Unit rates of various construction works; Value of progress payments certified (Output); Construction costs of different types of development; Construction project database (since 1997) & Demand and market prices of basic construction materials. Please note: Registration is necessary for first time user.

Engineering Village 2 (EV 2)
Engineering Village 2 (EV2) is the most comprehensive interdisciplinary Engineering database. Databases available are, Chimica, Chemical Business NewsBase (CBNB), Compendex, Inspec, National Technical Information Service (NTIS), etc. It has over 16 million records, some of which have links to full text. EV2 covers journals, conference proceedings, unclassified government reports, and more.

ENGnetBASE : Engineering Handbooks Online
ENGnetBASE is one of the most important Engineering handbook databases in CRCnetBASE. It contains a compilation of essential Engineering information, including data, facts, figures, graphs, equations, illustrations and charts. This database covers handbooks for all disciplines of Engineering, incorporating the subdivisions namely CivilENGINEERINGnetBASE, ElectricalENGINEERINGnetBASE, MechanicalENGINEERINGnetBASE and TELECOMMUNICATIONnetBASE.

For a complete list of subscribed CRCnetBASE handbook databases click here or click E-Resources > E-Books > By publisher > CRC Press > List Subscribed Titles.

Geobase
Geobase is a unique multidisciplinary bibliographic information and abstracting database for Development Studies, Earth Sciences, Ecology, Geomechanics, Human Geography & Oceanography. It provides current coverage of almost 2,000 international journals (including both peer-reviewed titles and trade publications) and provides archival coverage of several thousand additional journal titles and books. It contains over 1.4 million records from 1980 to present, with more than 100,000 citations and abstracts added annually. Ninety-nine percent of entries in Geobase include English abstracts.

ICONDA [International Construction Database]
The International CONstruction DAtabase (ICONDA) covers worldwide technical literature on all fields of building construction, civil and construction engineering, and architecture and town planning. This bibliographic database is sponsored by the International Council for Building Research Studies and Documentation (CIB) and the International Union of Building Centres (UICB). It contains references taken from sources in more than 20 different countries. Each reference has abstracts and detailed keywords in English which are provided to the user to assist in the decision of what to read in full. Citations, mostly with abstracts, are in English. If a title is in a language other than English (55% are German titles), both the original title and the English translation are provided. Sources include over 400 periodicals, books, research reports, conference proceedings, business reports, theses, and non-conventional literature that is normally outside the public domain, with coverage dating back to the launch of the database in 1976. Subject coverage and topics include: Appropriate Technologies for Developing Countries; Bridges, Tunnels, Dams, etc; Building Stress, Corrosion & Damage; Building Conservation & Design; Dynamics of Buildings; Energy Conservation; Engineering & Geotechnics; Foundations; Large Scale and Multistory Buildings; Interior Design; Masonry, Concrete, Steel, Timber, etc; Project Planning & Management; and Structural Design & Material Testing.

SciFinder Scholar (SFS)
SciFinder Scholar (SFS) is a research discovery tool that allows students and faculty to access journal articles, books, theses, conference proceedings and patent documents in many scientific disciplines, including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and more from 1907 to the present. It provides search interface for access to Chemical Abstracts online. Chemical Abstracts covers the published scientific research in chemistry, and offers searching by author name, research topic, substance identifier, chemical structure, or chemical reaction. Now includes the Substructure Module (SSM). It also provides full-text documents and links to electronic patent documents from the USPTO, esp@cenet, and MicroPatent®

Library’s take: SciFinder Scholar includes the abstracts for articles in more than 10,000 journals, chiefly in chemistry. It is useful for materials research and for energy research. Coverage goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. (1 seat limit)

ScienceDirect
Contains over 9.6 million articles from over 2500 journals. It also covers over 3000 books which include reference works, monograph series and handbooks. Some journals like Lancet goes as far back as 1823.

Scopus
Has 37 million records from over 16000 journals, including trade journals. Covers life sciences, physical sciences, health sciences, social sciences and business. Indexes journals, conference proceedings, and quality web sources. Some records have links to full text. It does citation tracking. A researcher can find out how many times a particular article has been cited.

Science Citation Index Expanded (via Web of Science)
Science Citation Index Expanded (1980-current) is a multi- disciplinary index to more than 8500 of the most prestigious and high impact scientific journals.

Librarian's take: This database's unique features include: citation index, analytical tools in evaluating and ranking journals, related records search capability, and links to full-text journals subscribed by NUS Libraries.
