Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles
in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in
books, reports and reviews.
Engineering Village 2 (EV2)
This
is the
most important Engineering research database. It has five sub databases:
CBNB, Chimica, Compendex, Inspec, and NTIS
(more on each database below)
which can be searched individually or together.
It has over 16 million records, some of which have links
to full text. Covers journals, conference proceedings,
unclassified government reports, and more. Also has links to useful
sites like the European Patent Office, Esp@cenet and scientific research
tool, Scirus.
CBNB
: Chemical Business NewsBase (1985- ) provides worldwide chemical
business news and information. Sources include 300 core trade journals,
newspapers, company newsletters/interim and annual reports, books,
market research reports, and press releases.
Chimica,
(1970- ) covers 600 journals on
chemistry and chemical engineering, with emphasis on applied and
analytical chemistry. Other topics are physical chemistry, health and
safety, organic and inorganic chemistry, and materials science.
Compendex
(over 9
million records, 1969- ) indexes articles from over 5,000 journals and
conference proceedings. Over 190 disciplines in the all fields of
engineering, as well as related fields in science and management are
covered.
Inspec
(8 million records, 1969- ) is produced by the Institution of Engineering and
Technology (IET). Indexes 3,500 journals and 1,500 conference
proceedings. Topics covered are physics, electrical engineering,
electronics, communications, control engineering, computers and computing,
IT, material science, biomedical technology, etc.
NTIS : National
Technical Information Service
(over 2 million records, 1899- ) is a source of
reports (including unclassified ones) from US and international government
agencies like NASA, the United States Departments of Energy and Defense,
the German Federal Ministry of Research and
Technology and the Japan Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

PubMed, 1950-
PubMed is a project developed by the National Center for Biotechnology
Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). Has over 17 million citations from
MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the
1950s.

Science Citation Index Expanded (via Web of Science), 1980-
Science Citation Index Expanded (1980-) is a multidisciplinary index to the
journal literature of the sciences providing full indexes to over 5,900
major journals across 150 scientific disciplines. Disciplines covered
include biotechnology, computer science, materials science, mathematics and
many more.
Librarian's take: This database's unique features included citation index,
analytical tools in evaluating and ranking journals, related records search
capability and links to full-text journals subscribed by NUS Libraries.

SciFinder Scholar (SFS)
Covers
chemical and life sciences research published in journals, patents, books,
theses, conference proceedings, etc. Provides access to several Chemical Abstracts Service
(CAS) databases, including Chemical Abstracts (1967-), Registry, CASREACT,
CHEMLIST, CHEMCAT Medline, OldMedline. Has more than 19 million citations to
the chemistry literature. More than 35 million chemical substances can be searched by chemical name, chemical
structure, CAS Registry Numbers, formula. Offers chemical reaction
searching. Some records have links to full text.

Scopus
Has 29 million records.
Covers life sciences, physical sciences, health sciences, social sciences
and business. Indexes
journals, conference proceedings, trade publications and quality web
sources.
Some
records have links to full text.
It does citation tracking. A researcher can
find out how many times a particular article has been cited.
