This guide contains the following sections:

Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Market information

Global Market Information Database

Librarian's take:
Start off any search for market reports with this database. It contains market research reports of consumer products such as soft drinks, off-the-counter drugs, personal computers and so on. The reports include brand names, forecast for the industry and specific statistics such as totals sales, retail volume and so on. GMID also provides consumer lifestyle reports of various countries and advertising expenditure. GMID is sometimes known as "Euromonitor". Euromonitor is the producer of the database.

Browse through GMID's list of consumer products and other types of information
Look through Euromonitor's User Guide
See how to use GMID to search for market research on deodorant, shampoo and hotels.

Business Source Premier

Librarian's take:
Business Source Premier (BSP) is sometimes known as EBSCOHost. Although its strength is in its academic content, BSP also provides market research reports from Datamonitor and MarketWatch, industry profiles and SWOT analyses. Most of the reports are for consumer products. BSP tends to focus on the US markets and very little on Singapore. Asian coverage is fairly well covered.

See how to use BSP to search for market research on deodorant, shampoo and hotels.

Factiva

Librarian's take:
A database of newspaper articles is a great place to search for Singapore specific market information - especially when it includes Straits Times, Business Times, The Edge, Channel NewsAsia, TODAY and The New Paper. Do not expect full market research reports but rather snippets of market information such as "Aspial-Lee Hwa Jewellery is the largest jewellery chain in Singapore [with over 25 boutiques]". If you are searching for Singapore service markets such as nightspots, beauty business and so on, Factiva would be a good place to try. Factiva has also full-text of US and Asian newspapers.

Apart from news, Factiva also gives press releases of companies and company reports.

See how to use Factiva to search for market information on deodorant, shampoo and hotels.

Lexisnexis Academic

Librarian's take:
Lexisnexis is an alternative to Factiva because it is a newspaper database too. We suggest that you use Power Search if you want to search within Singapore newspapers. The coverage of Singapore newspapers are confined to Straits Times and Business Times only.

Apart from news, Lexisnexis also give some company reports.

See Page 5, Item #3 of this guide on how to use Lexisnexis to search for market information.

Frost and Sullivan

Librarian's take:
This database is excellent for technologies such as RFID, waste management, surgical instruments, interactive multimedia kioks and also cover services such as call centres. So, if you want to find out what the factors affecting the anti-allergic therapies market in the US, this is the database.

Frost and Sullivan is also used by management of technology students or Engineering students looking for the commercialization value of some technologies. It also gives technological developments and the drivers and threats to the application of technology in various industries.

See Page 7, Item #4 of this guide on how to use Frost and Sullivan to search for hybrid electric cars.

ISI Emerging Markets

Librarian's take:
This database is not a market research database. Its usefulness to market research is the snippets of information about industries in emerging markets. Sources of information range from government publications of these emerging markets to news reports. Emerging markets of the regions Asia and Central Asia, Central,  Eastern and Southeast Europe, Latin America, Middle East and North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa are covered.

Country reports

EIU.com

Librarian's take:
Look for country reports of Asian countries in this database. At EIU's main page, select a country. You may want to start with Country Profile of a country which gives a yearly overview of the country's economy. The Country Reports give the monthly analysis. Country Forecast will include forecast data for that country. To obtain the raw data used in these reports, try the database EIU CountryData.

Business Source Premier

Librarians' take:
Business Source Premier (BSP) also provides EIU country reports but the latest reports are usually 1 year late. Apart from EIU, BSP also has Business Monitor business forecast reports and various risk reports.

Competitor information

OneSource

Librarian's take:
As its name suggests, this is the starting point from which to obtain company financials of publicly-listed companies in Asia. Snippets of news of the company are also included. It also gives peer analysis of companies of a specific industry searchable by industry codes. The search features are user-friendly and company financials are downloadable in Excel.

Osiris

Librarian's take:
This database contains company financials of listed companies worldwide. It gives data and not analyses, hence, there are no news or reports. Data goes as far back as 5-10 years.

Orbis

Librarian's take:
This is a sister database to Osiris as it is from the same producer of Osiris. The search engine is the same. Orbis focuses on unlisted companies in Asia.

ISI Emerging Markets

Librarian's take:
Even though ISI Emerging Markets provide company financials, its strength is in its collection of Annual Reports in PDF.

Factiva

Librarian's take:
Apart from news about competitors and some company financials, Factiva has some corporate performance reports.

Lexisnexis Academic

Librarian's take:
Lexisnexis, being an alternative to Factiva, is best used to obtain brief reports from Hoover, Worldscope, Disclosure and so on.

Business Source Premier

Librarian's take:
When using the multi-purpose BSP for competitor information, search for any magazines or journals using the Company field. The search will also bring out any SWOT Analyses from Datamonitor.

Economic statistics

EIU CountryData

Librarian's take:
EIU CountryData has the raw economic data that are used to produce the country reports in EIU.com. Countries worldwide are covered with at least 10 years of data.

EIU MarketIndicators

Librarian's take:
Major sector data are covered. As it is a sister database of EIU CountryData, you will be using the same search engine. Asian countries only with at least 10 years of data.

International Financial Statistics

Librarian's take:
This database is from IMF and gives financial statistics of countries worldwide.

World Development Indicators

Librarian's take:
This database is from World Bank and gives economic indicators of countries worldwide.

SourceOECD

Librarian's take:
Economic statistics of OECD countries such as Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxemborg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.

Global Market Information Database

Librarian's take:
Apart from market research reports and market statistics, GMID also gives some economic statistics going as far back as 10 years.

Doing a survey? Where are the company addresses?

OneSource

Librarian's take:
Provides names of executives, company names and addresses. Does not include email addresses of all executives. The information is downloadable in Excel.

Osiris and Orbis

Librarian's take:
Provides names of Board of Directors, company names, addresses. No email addresses given. Information is downloadable in Excel.

Lexisnexis Academic

Librarian's take:
Some companies have names of executives, Board of Directors, company names and addresses. Some have email addresses. Not downloadable in Excel.
