Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index (via Web of Science) 1980-
Produced by the Institute for Scientific Information. It provides bibliographic citations to journal articles, letters, editorials and book reviews. Subject coverage includes archaeology; architecture; art; Asian studies; classics; dances; folklore; history; languages; linguistics; literature; literary reviews; music; philosophy; poetry; radio; television; film; religion and theatre. Updated weekly.

BAS (Bibliography of Asian Studies) Online 1971-
Contains citations to Western-language monographs, journal articles, chapters in edited volumes, and conference proceedings on all aspects of Asia published since 1971. Newly published monographs have been excluded since 1992.

Social Sciences Citation Index (via Web of Science) 1980-
Produced by the Institute for Scientific Information on Web of Science. It provides bibliographic data and cited references to articles, reports of meetings, letters and editorials published in journals. Subject coverage includes anthropology; archaeology; area studies; business and finance; communication; community health; crime; demographics; education research; ethnic group studies; international relations; management; marketing; social sciences and urban planning and development. Abstracts are available from 1991 onwards. Updated weekly

Proquest Dissertations & Theses Database (PQDT) (E-Resource)
A comprehensive database of dissertations and theses records from around the world. Where available, PQDT provides 24 page previews of dissertations and theses. It allows natural language searching and the menu-driven search facility help users find information quickly and easily.

The Hong Kong University Theses Online (HKUTO)
The Hong Kong University Theses Collection comprises more than 11,280 titles of theses and dissertations submitted for higher degrees to the University of Hong Kong since 1941. These include works in the arts and humanities, education, the social, medical and natural sciences, many of them deal entirely with or focus on subjects relating to Hong Kong. The collection is primarily in English notwithstanding the availability of a number of Chinese titles, particularly those submitted to the Department of Chinese. The University Libraries aim to build up a comprehensive collection of HKU theses over the past years though it is understandable that a few graduates prefer not to deposit their works in the Library.

The National Institute of Informatics academic content portal is the integrated search system for NII's Major databases. includes CiNii, Webcat Plu, KAKEN & NII-DBR, which provide academic research information.

Japan Politics Central

JP Central provides a searchable database on Japanese politicians that was donated to the University of Virginia by Dynamic Strategies Asia in 2003. Other resources, including information on Japanese election results and public policy debates, were developed by the Japan Political Studies Group under the leadership of Leonard Schoppa.

Japanese Public Opinion Database (JPOLL)(http://ropercenter.uconn.edu/jpoll/JPOLL.html
JPOLL contains more than 10,000 public opinion questions and the respective responses from Japan's major survey research sources. These studies cover social, political, and economic topics throughout the current decade. Users can search for public opinion questions using keywords, topics, dates, and organizations as search criteria.

Nikkei Telecom21 (E-Resource)
Nikkei Telecom21 is a comprehensive business information and economic statistics database. It also provides full text search of newspapers, such as Nihon Keizai Shinbun, Nikkei Sangyo Shinbun, Nihon Ryutsu Shinbun MJ etc., and over twenty other Nikkei business journals. A directory of 'Who’s who of business in Japan' is also available in this database.

Factiva (E-Resource)
A reputable business information resource that allows searching for timely news articles from major national and international newspapers, trade journals, and wires, including The Wall Street Journal and The Economist.

LexisNexis Academic (E-Resource)
Provides full text of hundreds of news sources including newspapers, magazines, and newsletters. Pretty good about having boxes to fill in, to aid you in searching.
