Critical Evaluation of Resources

Review Process

What you need to find out:
  • If the source is a periodical article, was it reviewed before publication?

  • If the source is a book, what is the reputation of the publisher?

  • Was the source critically reviewed after it was written?

How you can find out :
  • Look at the front pages of the journal or check Ulrich's Plus [e-resource] to determine if the journal is peer reviewed.

  • Reference sources such as Publishers Weekly [Z284 PW] may provide useful information about the publisher. Information about the publisher can help you identify bias or point of view. However, the fact that the publisher is reputable does not guarantee quality, although it does indicate that the author met with the publisher's standards.

  • Read a critical review of the article or book by using a source such as Book Review Digest [e-resource] or other indexes covering the field. Is the review positive?
