How to Search Factiva
A product of the Dow Jones and Reuters companies, Factiva is a platform that offers news and business information. Factiva provides access to publications from 152 countries, written in 22 languages including more than 370 continuously updated newswires. This encompasses information from close to 10,000 sources from local and regional newspapers, trade publications, business newswires, company profiles, and market research reports.
The newspapers covered include The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, South China Morning Post, Sydney Morning Herald, Yomiuri Shimbun. The magazines include The Economist, Forbes, Fortune, Time, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, Far Eastern Economic Review.
Singapore newspapers available on Factiva include Business Times (from 30 Apr 1994), Lianhe Zaobao (from 20 Jan 1999), New Paper (from 17 Jun 2004), The Straits Times (from 1 Jan 1995), Today (from 1 Jan 2004)and also Channel NewsAsia (from 21 Sep 2000). Singapore magazines available in Factiva are Retail Asia, The Asian Banker, Asia Computer Today Weekly, MIS Asia, The Edge Singapore.
Please note that online sources give only the full text without photographs, charts or advertisements. The majority of articles are available like in the print copy, with the exception of articles reproduced from other news agencies like Associated Press, Bloomberg, Reuters and articles by independent writers.
Access Factiva
To access Factiva, point your browser to:
- NUS Libraries Homepage at http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg/.
- Click on Login and enter your NUSNET userid and password if prompted.
- Under Major Databases, click on Factiva.
Please ensure that:
- cookies are enabled [FAQ]
- you are using Internet Explorer 5.01 or Netscape 6.01 and above
Factiva is available to NUS staff and students. You will need to enter your nusstf (or nusstu) \ NUSNET userid and password when prompted.
From the Factiva main screen, you have:
Search to find the full text of articles or search using Factiva Intelligent Indexing terms used. Type in some keywords in the Free Text search box and click on Run Search to find articles match your keywords in All Sources and All Dates.
- To search only in a specific source e.g. The Straits Times:
- Click on Source, type the newspaper title in the box provided and press Enter.
- Click on the title required and check that Source shows your selection.
- Click on the search box next to Free Text and enter your keywords. Click on Examples below Free Text for help.
- Click on the drop-down arrow next to All Dates to select the period to search.
News Pages to browse selected current newspapers
- Click on News Pages tab at the top of the page.
- Select the region/industry required, e.g. Asia, South/Southeast, Asia, North, Greater China.
- Under Asia, South/Southeast, the newspapers listed include Asian Wall Street Journal, Bangkok Post, Business Times, Jakarta Post, The Hindu, The Straits Times.
Use Source Title Search to browse any newspaper
- Click on Search tab at the top of the page.
- Click on Source, type the newspaper title in the box provided and press Enter.
- Click on i next to the newspaper title to get another screen with Source Details.
- Check the Source Code used for the newspaper, e.g. code for International Herald Tribune is INHT.
- Go back to Search, type RST=INHT in Free Text search box, select Date and click on Run Search.
- The Source Restrictor Code (RST) allows you to browse newspapers by restricting it to a particular newpaper e.g. RST=STIMES (for The Straits Times) or RST=STBT (for Business Times).
Error Message
If you encounter the error message that the "user name and password is already in use" or if Factiva prompts for user name and password, it means that all our available licences are in use. Click on your Web browser BACK button and try again later.
EXIT
To fully logout of Factiva, click on Logout located on the top right-hand corner of the screen. This will enable another NUS user to access Factiva. Do not just click on Home, Forward, Back, go to another page or close your Web browser.
HELP
In Factiva, click on Support near the top right-hand corner for online help in using Factiva.
