Subject Search
Subject search help you find materials on
a particular topic with the use of appropriate subject headings. Most of records in LINC are
assigned controlled vocabulary terms or subject headings from the Library of Congress
Subject Headings (LCSH) and the Library of Medicine's Medical Science Subject Headings (MESH).
MESH is only used in Medical Library.
Click on Subject.
At the search box, type in
complete subject heading or the beginning of the subject heading, e.g. city
planning political aspects
(LCSH) or geriatic nursing (MESH)
Note
- To retrieve items with the subject heading China -- Civilization -- Foreign influences
type either civilization china foreign influences or
foreign influences civilization china
- To do an exact subject search, add the vertical bar ( | ) at the end of the search statement,
e.g. mathematics |
A list of records with the subject words you typed is shown.
Click on the subject heading to view
the items.
Browse the list and click on relevant records.
Click on the box in the Mark column to save and export that record.
When viewing the full record, take note of
the Location and Call # of the item. Some records have
table of contents attached showing the chapters in the book.
When viewing a relevant record, look at
the other SUBJECTS used. Click on one of the subjects used to find other items on the
same topic, e.g. Urban policy.
Click on Another Search to do another
Subject search or click on Start Over to search by another option.
If you are not sure what subject headings
to use:
- Check the Library of Congress Subject Headings available at the information desk
- Ask a librarian at the information desk for help
- Use Keyword search in LINC instead of Subject
