How do I access full-texts (via library proxy) from links in email alerts?

 1.  Email Alerts

Email alerts help you to keep abreast of current literature in your field of interest. After creating the alerts in databases or journal publishers, URL links to the latest citations will be automatically sent to your email account by the databases or journal publishers. To access the full-texts from the URL links listed in your email alerts, you will have to install the Proxy Bookmarklet.

 2.  What is a Proxy Bookmarklet?

It is a bookmark that automatically prepends the NUS Library proxy to the required  URL link in your browser. This allows you to view the URL as though you were on campus, giving you access to materials licensed for use by NUS staff and students. If you are not authenticated, you will be prompted for your NUSNET ID and password.

 3. How do I install the Proxy Bookmarklet in my browser?

  For Internet Explorer:
1) Right click on this link: <NUS Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet>.
2) Select "Add to Favorites".
3) If you wish to add to "Links", go to "Favourites" and drag and drop the bookmarklet to "Links".

Note:
· Alternative installation method for IE7 only: Click and drag the link to the "Links" toolbar.
· If a warning message: "You are adding a favorite that may not be safe. Do you want to continue?" appears, click "Yes" to continue.
· If the "Links" toolbar is not visible in the web browser, go to View->Toolbars menu of the browser to enable it.

  For Mozilla Firefox:
1)  Right click on this link: <NUS Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet>.
2)  Select "Bookmark This Link". Or click and drag the link to the "Bookmarks" toolbar.

 For Safari:
1)  Click and drag this link: <NUS Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet> to the "Bookmarks" bar.

 4.  How do I use the Bookmarklet to 'proxy' the URL links in email alerts?

Go to the email alert and click on the required link of citation alert.

A browser session will open for the link where access to the required article is restricted.

Click on the "NUS Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet" which you have installed in your Browser toolbar/Bookmark/Favourites.

The NUS Library proxy is automatically added and you now can view the full-text.
Note:
You may be prompted to login to the library proxy if you have not done so previously.

5.  What about email alerts received from the Web of Science databases as in the following example?

When you click on the above Web of Science email alert, you will notice that the link automatically changes to another completely different URL. You need to manually add the proxy stem 'http://libproxy1.nus.edu.sg/login?url=' in front of the given link. You can then search this new URL in your browser:

At the results page, click on 'Full Text' to view the article:

6. How do I access full-texts from links retrieved from external websites e.g. Google Scholar?

Instructions for accessing full-texts (via Library proxy) from external databases are available at http://lib.nus.edu.sg/lion/d/proxybkmrklet_google.html
