How to Find Journal Articles

To search for articles on your topic:

  • Check the Digital Library or the CD-ROM list for an appropriate index or abstract database to use.

  • You can also check for indexes and abstracts in LINC. Use the Subject Search option to search for example social sciences indexes or engineering indexes.

  • Use the keywords from your list of terms to formulate your search statement to use in the database.

E.g. Type (aged or elderly) and (care or caregivers) into the search box.

  • Browse the citations found and evaluate the relevance of your search.
    • Are the citations relevant?
    • Are there too many citations?
    • Are there too little citations?

  • Look at the descriptors, subject headings or identifiers of relevant citations and look for new terms to use to search for more citations.

  • Take note of Source or Journal and volume number, issue number and page number of relevant articles, e.g. Gerontologist. 2002 Apr; Vol 42(2): 188-198.

  • Use LINC Title Search to check if the Library has the specific issue of the journal
Please note that the Library may not have every article you find in the indexes.

  • Go to the correct location to obtain article. E.g. the journal's location is CL Cur Periodical for 45(5) or CL Bnd Periodical for volume 41 with the Call number HQ1060 G.

  • The Library may subscribe to the electronic version of the journal and you can view or print the article from your desktop. E.g. Journal of fluid mechanics

  • Searching one database may not be sufficient, do the search in a few other relevant databases to get wider coverage and perspective.

  • If you have problems with selecting databases, please approach the Information Desk staff for assistance.
