Speedoc for online document delivery

Wong Yoke Fye, Central Library Reprographic Services Dept

Odds are you may have heard or read about Speedoc, but you're not quite sure just what it is.

Speedoc is the new service launched on 1st October 1998 by the Library's Reprographic Services Dept. Speedoc is part of the Library's commitment to one-stop service by bringing document delivery directly to a user's desktop. Users should note that document delivery service is open only to teaching and research staff employed by the University, and to graduate students, to assist them with their research. It saves the user time and effort of having to physically collect the requested document from the Library.

How does document delivery work in the first place? When a user discovers that the Library does not have a document that he wants, the user may submit a request to the Library to obtain the document for him. The document can be an article from a journal, a chapter from a book, a paper from a conference1, part of a report2, a newspaper article or a patent. The user would have to come to the Library to obtain the request form, submit the request, then upon notification of the document's arrival by internal mail, return to the library to collect the document.

Speedoc, our online document delivery service, helps to eliminate the last part of this process. In order to take advantage of this new service, users need to sign up for Speedoc.

The form is available on NUSOnline. Click on Integrated Virtual Learning Environment and Library. At the NUS Library Intranet page, click on Staff. Under E-forms, click on Online Document Delivery Services. Alternatively, go the URL
https://online.nus.edu.sg/library/odds/

Please note that electronic forms are now available on Digital Library at http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg/digital/index.html (wef July 2001).

You can submit the completed form using the Submit button at the end of the form. You can also print the form, complete it and return the form to Reprographics Services Dept on the 4th Floor in Central Library by fax, mail or in person.

At the moment, only selected documents can be delivered online. The Library is dependent on our suppliers (mainly other libraries) to fill our requests. If the supplier has the capability to send the document electronically, then we are able to deliver the document to the user's desktop.

While we are a step closer to a one-stop service, there is still some way to go. In the near future, the Library plans to have the document delivery request form available on NUSOnline. Users will have to print the form and submit the completed form by fax, mail or in person. When the legalities of electronic signatures are resolved, the Library will be able to offer a complete a one-stop service for document delivery.

1 Conference includes workshops, seminars, congresses and symposiums.

2 Requests for full reports should be made to Acquisitions Dept in the library serving you.
