PERIND for articles on Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and ASEAN

Central Library RIS Dept

Searching for materials on Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei or ASEAN (as an entity)? Are you aware that apart from LINC (the NUS Library catalogue), another useful tool to consult for literature search on these countries is PERIND? This specialised database, a product of the NUS Library, is an index to periodical articles, book chapters and book reviews. It covers a wide range of subjects including arts and the humanities, social sciences, business and management, architecture, city planning, building and real estate, law, medicine, science and technology relating to these countries.

PERIND currently has over 80,000 records from books and from more than 270 core journal titles published locally and internationally. Most of the records date from 1980 though medicine is covered from 1975 and law from 1932. The articles indexed are mainly in English with a small number in Malay. In addition to articles, book chapters and book reviews, materials such as editorials, letters, speeches, interviews, obituaries, legislation notes, case notes and clinical case studies are also indexed.

What makes this database different from the other indexes (both printed and electronic) subscribed by the NUS Library is that almost all of the items indexed in PERIND are available in the Library.

To obtain the cited article, all a user needs to do is to take down the call number of the source i.e. the journal or book in which it is published and then search by that call number in LINC to find out the specific library location.

Items indexed without call number information but are indicated as RCOLL (CL) or RCOLL (MD) are to be found in the Reprint Collection of the Central Library or Medical Library respectively. To request for such items, please submit their document numbers at the Information Desk of the appropriate library.

PERIND is accessible from Digital Library.

No username or password is required as access is controlled by IP address.

The database is also accessible on the Internet by subscription from Informit Online at http://www.informit.com.au

It is marketed by Informit in Australia, the joint producer of the database with the NUS Library. Also available by subscription from Informit is the biennial CD-ROM entitled SMC Ondisc containing PERIND, the NUS Theses Collection and the Singapore/Malaysia Collection.
