LINUS January 1999 : Library News
New features on WebLINC
Lim-Yeo Pin Pin, Central Library RIS Dept
The NUS Library recently loaded a new version of its Web OPAC, known as WebLINC. It now has some new features not available in the previous version and a new logo. WebLINC is available at http://linc.nus.edu.sg
There is an additional Shift-JIS code to view the Japanese characters in WebLINC.
The cursor is now in the search box ready for you to start typing your terms after you choose an option to search.
Frames are used to give the user quick access to the search box and show the results of the search at the same time.
Stack numbers are now shown in WebLINC. You need to take note of the stack numbers to request for materials located in the Closed Stacks, Microform and Media Resource.
With effect from January 1999, users can request for closed stack materials through LINC or WebLINC.
Click on Request or for LINC press G and type your name, matriculation or membership number and PIN.
In Central Library, closed stacks requests submitted before 10.30 am can be collected after 1pm and those submitted before 3.30 pm can be collected after 6pm. Collection times vary during vaction and for different libraries. Please check with the individual library for more details. An email reminder is also automatically generated to remind the user to pick up his request.
You can mark selected records in your search results by clicking on the box next to the desired titles.
After marking the desired titles, click on Save Marked Records and then click on Export Saved List and you can export them to your local disk or to any email address.
WebLINC has other features which are not new but useful. From the catalogue record, you can just click on View the electronic version and access the journal's Web site when there is an electronic version of the journal on the Web.
Limit This Search is a feature which allows you to narrow your search results by other criteria such as another author, words in the title, year, language and library where item is located. You can also sort your search results by year.
Search specific collection allows you to only search for materials in a specific library or collection, such as the Medical Library or the periodical collection.
The Library buys the table of contents for selected books to enrich the catalogue and to make it easier to find materials. Currently there are more than 70,000 tables of contents attached to records of books published after 1992.
