New tables + SPnP points in Central Library
Central Library Circulation Dept Head
No sooner had the examinations ended in late November 1998, noise and dust descended on the 3rd floor of the Central Library. However, there was a good reason for all the commotion, as work was undertaken to refurbish the 3rd Floor reading area.
As part of our plans to upgrade the facilities in the Central Libray, all the reading tables on the 3rd Floor were replaced with brand-new custom-built tables covered with English brown oak veneer. These tables are tastefully and ergonomically designed with the comfort of the user in mind. Partitions have been erected on the tables to give our users more privacy.
The main feature of the refurbishment is the provision of Secure Plug and Play (SPnP) points on every table. This allows NUS staff and students to get connected to the NUS computer network, NUSNET, when they bring their properly-configured notebook computers. For users whose notebook batteries are low -- no problem! Electrical outlets are available on all the tables for the user to power up their notebooks.
Users can now access NUSNET any time the Library is open with any of the over 400 SPnP points on 3rd Floor and other parts of the Library. They need not be constrained by the opening hours and the limited number of PCs in the computer clusters or CBLCs.
A word of caution though. As "live" wires are embedded in the tables, users are advised not to move any of the tables. We hope you will enjoy the new facilities.
