Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for Zainal
Zainal Mat has been awarded with the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, which includes a medal, a watch and a ribbon, for his consistently high standard of performance during his National Service with the Singapore Police Force since 1978. He is an attendant with the Central Library Circulation Dept. He joined the NUS Library in 1990.
He is now called up for up to two weeks in a year to assist the full-time police officers in their duties. He has escorted criminals from the police station or from the prison to the courts to stand trial. During Polling Day, Zainal was on duty to help ensure orderliness. He recalls helping in the stakeouts and raids for drug pushers, illegal immigrants and housebreakers in crime-prone areas. He has assisted with plainclothes duty at functions attended by VIPs. This usually starts hours before the VIP actually attends the function. He has learnt to handle police cases and to write police reports.
Zainal has this to say:
"Singapore is a small country. If you do anything wrong, there is no escape. So it is best to be good. Crime really does not pay."
