Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry Fifth Edition on CD-ROM

Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry Fifth Edition was published from 1985 to 1996. This is the first edition published in the English language. The printed version comprises 28 alphabetically arranged volumes, 8 volumes on general aspects such as chemical engineering, industrial safety, and analytical methods, and a cumulative index volume with more than 80,000 carefully selected keywords. Altogether, the 37 volumes contain more than 1,000 major articles, written by almost 3,000 authors who are experts in their fields, affiliated to leading chemical companies or research institutes, 10,000 tables, 20,000 figures, and innumerable references to further sources of information.

The CD-ROM edition of Ullmann's Encyclopedia is equipped with a powerful retrieval software. It enables you to:

  • search for a word or phase in the entire text
  • use wildcards, Boolean operators, and proximity searching to expand the scope of the search and enhance the relevance of the results
  • browse through articles
  • follow cross-references via hyperlinks
  • look up literature references
  • print out entries
  • copy text into your Word for Windows documents

Complicated searches that may be time-consuming with printed books can now be performed in seconds. This is achieved by using a number of indexes such as:

  • full text index
  • author index
  • CAS registry number index
  • keyword index

You can also enhance the relevance of the search results by confining the search to selected sections of the encyclopedia or of individual documents (e.g. tables or figure captions)

Multimedia Methods in Molecular Biology CD-ROM

Multimedia methods in Molecular Biology CD-ROM is produced and published by Chapman & Hall in association with Interactive Learning Productions. This disk contains almost 200 pre-defined Protocols written by many of the world's leading molecular biologists. Protocols on this CD-ROM also have many associated features:

  • videos and animations explains the more complex procedures and concepts
  • diagrams and figures illustrate many Protocols.
  • tables and recipes that show how to make up the solutions, buffers and other chemicals required to carry out the Protocols
  • hints and troubleshooting features help you track down and eliminate problems which have occurred while carrying out the Protocols
  • hazards which warn you of potential dangers involved with handling dangerous chemicals
  • glossary which defines technical terms
  • note facility which allows Protocols to be annotated at every step

Hazardous Materials Handbook CD-ROM

This is the CD-ROM equivalent of the printed handbook with the same name. It provides critical data for those who must decide how to best decrease the likelihood of chemical accidents; and, in the event of mishaps, to limit their consequences. It also presents data on heavily-used and widely-transported chemicals.

Hazardous Materials Handbook covers nearly 1,350 hazardous chemicals found in bulk. Chemical records are presented in a 15-section uniform format to assist readers who must find information quickly or compare data in various records. Sections include names and synonyms, identification, reportable quantity, physical description, response, labeling, chemical designation, observable characteristics, health hazards, fire hazards, chemical reactivity, environmental, shipping information, hazardous classification and physical and chemical properties.

Encyclopedia of Inorganic Chemistry on CD-ROM

This is the CD-ROM equivalent to the 8-volume printed encyclopedia with the same name. Over 300 internationally recognized contributors working in conjunction with a distinguished International Advisory Board have compiled the Encyclopedia.

Besides the wealth of information provided by the 260 main articles, the CD-ROM version of the Encyclopedia has been meticulously cross-referenced, taking users at a click of a button to further areas of interest in related articles and definitions. Users will also find extensive reference lists and thorough indexing as well as numerous photographs, figures, computer-drawn structural formulae, tables, equations and schemes.

The Encyclopedia encompasses the whole of modern inorganic chemistry:

  • Bioinorganic Chemistry
  • Physical and Theoretical Methods
  • Organometallic Chemistry
  • Solid State Chemistry
  • Main Group Elements
  • Transition Metals

The CD-ROM features state-of-the-art search functionality to speed up users' data searches. Boolean operators enable fast and focused access to modern inorganic chemistry:

  • 260 main articles
  • 850 definitions
  • 365 cross references
  • 892 tables
  • over 2,000 figures
  • over 1,000 schemes
  • nearly 2,000 figures
  • over 8,000 equations

User-friendly software with context-sensitive help enables easy and intuitive navigation. Articles with photographs, figures and computer-drawn structural formulae feature with up to 170% magnification facility for greater viewing detail.

Elsevier's Dictionary of Chemistry including Terms from Biochemistry in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German CD-ROM

This is a multilingual dictionary CD-ROM with a large number of terms specifically relating to biochemistry which provides a link between organic chemistry, physiology, genetics and medicine.

All the CD-ROMs listed are available at Science Library Information desk.
