Self-service fines payment

Patrick Lye, Central Library Circulation Dept Head

To make it easier for our user to clear their fines, the Library has installed self-service fines payment booths in all the libraries. These booths are available as long as the Library is open. With effect from July 98, all library users must clear any outstanding fines before they can borrow another item.

At the self-service fines payment booth, insert your student matriculation card or library membership which is also your cashcard (oval-shaped chip) into the reader. The system reads your card to show your outstanding fines and available funds in the cashcard. You are prompted to answer YES or NO to pay the fines. If you answer YES, the amount is deducted from your cashcard and the card is ejected from the reader. You get a receipt with the date, membership number and amount paid without a detailed breakdown of the fines.

When using your own matriculation card, you can only make payment for your own fines. You can also use commercially available cashcards to pay your fines. The system will prompt you to enter your matriculation or membership number before it can show your fines. The fines has to be paid in full. The system will flash a message that you have insufficient funds in your card if your fines exceed the available amount in your card. You can go to a bank ATM or cashcard top-up machine to transfer more funds to your cashcard.
