Using Dow Jones

The NUS Library has subscribed to Dow Jones News /Retrieval (DJN/R) and it is accessible on NUSNET. DJN/R has access to over 3,000 full-text publications as well as real-time news from Dow Jones and other major sources. All NUS staff and students can access DJN/R for teaching, learning and research purposes.

How to Access

Users must logon to their own NUSNET account and window shop for Dow Jones. If you need to access DJN/R from home, please see NUSNET-II via pcANYWHERE.

In the Dow Jones folder, double-click on the icon for Dow Jones and a licence notice will appear to inform users of the condition of usage. Click on the OK button and the system will automatically login to DJN/R.

The DJN/R retrieval software is easy to use. In most cases, you can make your selection by clicking on a button or choosing an option from the drop-down list. Online help on how to search is available. Here is a brief tour on what is available and some of the features of the system:

Dow Jones Search screen

Current News

It gives the latest business and world news from Dow Jones and other news agencies as they are available on DJN/R.

This Just In ® folder

Search Newswires and Newspapers folder

You can search up to 90 days of news articles from selected newspapers and Dow Jones newswires.

Search News & Articles

Gives access to over 3,000 publications including newspa pers (e.g. Straits Times and Asian Wall Street Journal), newswires, magazines, trade journals and transcripts.

Define Search folder

Select Source folder

Click on Remove All or Remove buttons before selecting publication sources. You can view the sources by: Type, Industry, Region or Title.

E.g. To select only Straits Times:

View Search Results folder

Choose articles by checking the box next to the article number and click Read Articles or Save Articles.


Track News & Articles

This service is password sensitive. Do not use this service as NUSNET logins to the first available password and you will not be able to view what you had previously created.


Company & Industry Data

Has business and financial data on mainly US and interna tional companies. It contains mainly third-party databases which are not available under our subscription agreement.

You select an option for Get Information on a Company, Screen for Companies or Compare Companies and Industries. You can also search a specific source, SEC Full-Text Filings, Zacks Corporate Earnings Estimates, Media General Financial Services, Corporate Canada Online and Saudi 1000 (terminal mode).

E.g. Search for Creative Technology

If you click on Company Overview, which are third-party databases, you will get an error message.


Quotes & Market Data

Gives current and historical quotes, averages from Dow Jones and other sources excluding third-party databases. You can access all databases except Real Time Equities Quotes and Tradeline Global Security Pricing & Analysis. In most cases, you make your choices by clicking on one of the selections on the screen.


Career & Travel

For access to Academic American Encyclopedia, Peterson's College Selection Service, etc.

You can access all databases except MCI Mail. In most cases, you make your selection by clicking on one of the selection on the screen.


How to Logout

Important :

Capturing data to a file

You can capture the data on the screen to a diskette or the hard disk, even when there is no Save button on the screen.

Copying data to another program

You can also copy the data directly to another program like Microsoft Word. You need to have both programs running at the same time.

Do the first two steps as above followed by:

You cannot access DJN/R when Internet is unavailable.

When the Internet line is too busy, you may also encounter problems when logging in, when retrieving or downloading records.

Try searching during off-peak periods.
Don't give up. Be patient and try again later.
