The Faculty of Medicine, which was founded in 1905 as the Straits and Federated Malay States Government Medical School, celebrated its 90th anniversary during the 1995-96 academic session. The Medical Library, which has a long and close relationship with the Faculty from the very beginning, is pleased to contribute to the occasion by the publication of the volume Leading the way : deans and heads of departments of the Faculty of Medicine.
Research work for the publication actually started
when the Medical Library participated in the compilation
of the list of Deans and Heads of Departments which was
included in the Faculty of Medicine's commerative volume, A continuity of ideals. During the course of the
project, it became apparent that while the information on
the deans and heads of departments was available, it was
widely scattered and was very time-consuming to gather.
It is our aim that with this publication, the information will be made more easily accessible and that it will assist future research on the history of the Faculty of Medicine.
One difference about this publication, compared with others published by the Library, is that it is not a bibliography but a compilation of facts. Quotations from University publications were used as far as possible to present the information. Also included is a chronological listing tracing the development of the Faculty and the establishment of new departments within it, as it was felt that a historical framework would be useful for the readers. This is followed by a listing of the Deans of the Faculty. The rest of the publication is arranged alphabetically by department and for each department there is a chronological listing of the heads.
Please note that on page 2 of the publication under Professor Lim Kok Ann, Note 1 should read as Professor Lim Kok Ann, Professor of Bacteriology, was elected...
