EMBASE is a bibliographic database produced by Elsevier Science B.V. It provides literature on biomedicine and pharmacology. This database is complementary to the MEDLINE database, and with these two major databases in the Medical Library, practically the whole spectrum of the medical and biomedical sciences are covered.
Subjects covered:
EMTAGS is a general indexing concept for the overall system used by Elsevier. EMTAGS Classification found in the field (EM) is to identify broad, frequently searched subjects. Examples of EMTAGS Classification are organ systems, experimental subjects, types of study, geographic areas, key aspects, routes of drug administration and age group.
EMCLAS is the EMBASE Classification system used from 1974 through 1988. It was the original subject classification system for EMBASE. In 1991, EMCLAS was phased out in favour of the EMTREE system. However, the top level section numbers and headings are still used to classify each record.
For example:
1 Anatomy, anthropology, embryology & histology
2 Physiology
...
9 Surgery
etc
EMTREE is a hierarchically structured, controlled vocabulary used for subject indexing. The thesaurus has been in use since 1988.
Each record in the EMBASE database contains medical and drug descriptors from the EMTREE thesaurus. The use of a controlled vocabulary allows searching for EMBASE records across the Medical Descriptors (DE) and Drug Descriptors (DR) fields.
E.g. Search for Cyclosporin
