Returning made easy

Patrick Lye, Central Library Circulation Dept

For the first time, returning library books has never been easier with the introduction of a new self-service check-in at the Central Library Recommended Books Collection loan counter.

Self-service return machineUsers returning books at the counter need only place their books into the self-service machine and everything is automatically taken care of. It is easy to use and cuts the returning time to just a few seconds for each book.

The machine was designed and built by the staff of the Circulation Department. A prototype of the machine was first introduced in 1994. After more refinements, we launched a working model.

Although commercially produced self-service machines are available, the Library was unable to make use of them as they do not totally meet our local requirements and standards. With this in-house machine, we are able to ensure that the security of our library books is not compromised.

The Library plans to introduce the self-service returning machines at more counters as users are happy with the convenience and speed offered by them.
