Gan Kim Hong, Science Library

Below are brief descriptions of notable new CD-ROM titles in Science Library, grouped into categories.

GENERAL

ISTP on CD-ROM. 1991-present
Print equivalent : Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings, by ISI. It is a well-known conference index for science and technology which indexes the published literature from significant conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops and conventions, which are published for the first time with the complete papers. Updated quarterly.
McGraw-Hill Multimedia Encylopedia of Science & Technology
Combines two reference sources : McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science amp;& Technology (7th edition), and McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms (5th edition). Exploiting the multimedia of images, sound and animation, it offers animations of difficult concepts, as well as, geographic maps with almanac data, sky maps and constellation maps.
PASCAL. 1987-present
A major bibliographic abstracting and indexing service in the area of science, which is particularly strong in its coverage of French publications as it is produced by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, France). About half a million entries are added each year. Covers the life sciences including psychology, the exact sciences, applied sciences and technology, earth sciences including space science, and information science. Also multilingual; languages mainly covered being English, French, Spanish and German. Updated quarterly.

CHEMISTRY

Beilstein Current Facts in Chemistry. 1992-present
Every year, the Beilstein Institute processes more than 300,000 compounds, with their associated data, from about 100 journals. Before these data are evaluated for inclusion in the Beilstein Handbook and Beilstein Online, they are published on CD-ROM. The CD-ROM allows structure searches, as well as factual data searches such as physical properties, molecular formula, literature citations, preparations and reactions. Updated quarterly.
CASSI on CD. 1907-present
CASSI (Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index) is a listing of all titles indexed by the Chemical Abstracts Service, an authoritative source in the field of chemistry. It gives accurate bibliographic information, including frequency, date of first appearance, title changes, as well as publisher/source information, document suppliers, and library holdings. Such detailed information helps the user to locate the journal articles as indexed in Chemical Abstracts. Updated twice a year.
Dictionary of Analytical Reagents amp;& Dictionary of Organometallic Compounds on CD-ROM
Recently added to the Chapman & Hall Chemical Databases (CHCD), containing chemical substances information, such as chemical, physical and biological properties, systematic and common names of compounds, CAS Registry Numbers, literature references, structure diagrams and connection tables. The Dictionary of Analytical Reagents concentrates on organic reagents, while the Dictionary of Organometallic Compounds gives emphasis to compounds containing a metal-carbon bond.
Powder Diffraction File
A collection of single phase X-ray powder diffraction patterns, maintained and distributed by the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD). The data for each pattern is presented in the form of tables of characteristic interplanar spacings and the corresponding relative intensities. Updated annually.

BOTANY

Current Protocols on Molecular Biology
This is one of the Current Protocols publications, a series of manuals used in laboratories around the world as an authoritative source for effective, reliable methods in biology research and experimentation. Updated quarterly.
The Families of Flowering Plants
Contains descriptions of the Angiosperm families, maintained by the Taxonomy Laboratory of the Research School of Biological Sciences at the Australian National University. Every Angiosperm family is represented by a world-level morphological description, and is accompanied by at least one illustration, which are mostly line drawings, with some coloured and black-and-white photographs.
Index Kewensis on CD
Listing of plant names, with the bibliographic references of the publications in which the names first appeared. The print title, compiled since 1883, is an invaluable source of information to botanists. The availability of this work on CD-ROM allows sophisticated searches which would otherwise be impossible to carry out using the print version.

ZOOLOGY

Zoological Record on CD. 1978-present
Covers all major areas of zoology including behaviour, ecology, evolution, habitat, nutrition, parasitology, reproduction, taxonomy and zoogeography. Produced by SilverPlatter, it includes over 6,500 international journals, review annuals, monographs, proceedings and reports. Thesaurus searching by subject, geographical, palaeontological and taxonomical hierarchies is available. Updated quarterly. The print equivalent, Zoological Record, dates back to 1870 and is the authoritative index for zoological literature.
