Examination papers on Library InfoGate

This article guides you through searching and printing from the Examination Papers database in Library InfoGate which is accessible on all NUSNET-II terminals. Where appropriate, error messages and what they mean are explained.

How to Login

Double-click on the Library InfoGate icon to start LiI.

Use the Unlock User ID programme only after your user ID has been locked.
You do not always need to unlock your userid first before you get into Library InfoGate.

Use the Infogate Online Help to guide you through searching in Library InfoGate.

Each of the NUS libraries has terminals with Library InfoGate already loaded.

At the Library InfoGate Login Screen

Userid : Type in, WITHOUT any hyphens, your matriculation number or staff number or membership number. Higher degree students do not need to type in HD. DO NOT type in your NUSNET ID.
Password : Type in your NRIC No. or Passport No. (unless you have changed the default password).

When your cursor is at the userid or password box, help is available in the message bar at the bottom of the screen. It tells you what to type in each of these boxes.

Error Message:Library InfoGate Message
System Initialization Failed
Socket Called Failed

This means that the userid or password has been repeatedly entered wrongly.

Solution: Reboot and login to InfoGate again.
Error Message:Library InfoGate Message
System Initialization Failed
User ID is locked
Solution: Unlock your User ID and login to InfoGate again.

Select Database Screen

Double-click on EXAM Examination Papers Database. You can also click once on this line followed by a click on the OK button.

Search Window

The top part of the Search Window allows you to specify what you want to search. The Search Boxes on the left allow you to enter the search terms. On the right are the Field Boxes that tells the system what fields you want to search on. The default fields vary for each database.

Field boxes for EXAM Database

INDX : Index includes Subject, Course Number and Year fields
SUBJ : Subject field
For Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences students, type in Sociology, Chinese Studies, etc. (not individual course titles).
For Faculty of Engineering students, type in the course title eg. Fluid Mechanics, etc.
For Faculty of Science students, type in Physics, Plant Biology, etc.
For Faculty of Business Administration, type in the course name eg. Managerial Accounting, Business Policy, etc.
CNUM : Course number field.
Type the course number without spaces, eg. SC201. If the course number has changed, enter the old course number used at the time of the examination.
YEAR : Examination year field which follows the calender year and not the academic year.
Eg. Type in 1994.

Browsing list of subjects available

You can choose to use the BROWSE option and then select the Subject option if you want to browse through the list of subjects available for the Examination Papers database.

Result History Window

The Result History window at the bottom of the search screen shows the search results for your current session.

Example

Type SC201 on the line for INDX and click on the SEARCH button. In this instance, 11 records are retrieved for course SC201.

To display what you have searched, click on the VIEW RESULT button. If you have more than one line in the search result window, highlight the set you want before clicking the button.

Display Screen

There are four display windows. If any of the display windows is not available in the current record, it will be dimmed. You can click on the Titles, Abstracts, Full Text or Image buttons to change the display windows.

Titles Window

This window shows you the list of records retrieved for the current search set selected. In the example given, the list shows the records retrieved for SC201.

Abstracts Windows

To view record number 5 in the abstract format, click once on number 5 at the Titles window. The abstract format for this record will appear in the Abstract window.

Viewing examination papers

Double-click on the image icon in the Abstract window or click on the Image button.

Remote Connection error,
possibly due to server down or not logged in
Error code =0X110B
Solution : Exit from Library InfoGate, reboot terminal and login again before trying to view image again.

Printing Images

Make sure you are at the Image screen before you print the examination papers. If your cursor or highlight bar is at the Abstract screen, you will only print the text as it appears and not the actual examination paper. You can select only one record at a time to print when at the Image screen.

Click on the print icon or select the DOWNLOAD option and then select the TO PRINTER option.

At the Download Image to Printer window, specify the pages you want to print under Select Page Range. Click on the OK button. The print format has been defaulted to Fit to Page and you need not change this setting when printing.

Printing at NUS Libraries It costs eight cents per page when the printing is done on the laser printers attached to the Library InfoGate terminals in the NUS libraries.

Printing Problems
If you encounter printing problems, it may be due to:
  • No paper in the printer.
  • Not enough value left in your stored valued card. You cannot print if there are less than 21 points left in the card.
  • Printer is offline or stalled.

Downloading Images to Disk

Click on the download icon or select DOWNLOAD option and then select TO DISK option.

In the Download Image to Disk window, specify the pages you want to download and click on the OK button.

In the Save Image As... window, you need to specify the drive to which you want to download the image. The H drive is the default drive. You can change it to the B or A drive as desired. Please note that filename cannot be changed.

Each page of an examination paper downloaded is stored under one filename in TIFF format. Only certain programmes like WordPerfect 6.0a for Windows, or WordPerfect 6 for DOS can read this format. It is easier to use Word Perfect 6.0a.

Retrieving Images using WordPerfect 6.0a for Windows

  1. Figure Button
    Click on the Figure button to retrieve the graphics image.
  2. The Insert Image window will appear. Select the drive where your image is stored.
  3. Under List Files of Type, select Tagged Image Format (*.tif).
  4. Select the filename of your image.
  5. Click on the OK button. The image will appear.
  6. To change size of the retrieved image, click on Size... button and change display size to:
    Width - Full
    Height - Full
  7. Print image.
