New CD-ROMs at Science Library

Chew Hooi Tze, Science Library

The following CD-ROMs are available at the Science Library Information Desk.

ANI-CD Arthropod Name Index on CD-ROM 1996

The Arthropod Name Index (ANI) is an electronic database developed by CAB International (CABI). It currently contains 110,000 names (records) of agricultural arthropods, most of which are insects. Other groups include mites, spiders and millipedes. ANI also provides a name index to some 80 years of scientific literature. Every name published in Review of Agricultural Entomology since 1913 is included in ANI, together with the volume numbers of the records in which it has been cited. In this database you are able to search using any name, species epithet, genus group, family group, order group, class, author and common name.

Biochemistry

This CD-ROM is a product by Clearvue/eav. Part 1 & 2 in covers: The Chemistry of Life, The Chemistry of Carbohydrates & Lipids, The Chemistry of Proteins and The Chemistry of Nucleic Acids. It introduces the common types of biological molecules and basic principles of chemistry necessary for understanding cellular function. It also describes the molecular structure of bases, nucleotides, and polynucleotide chains; explains the chemistry of base pairing and the double helix; and compares the structure of DNA and RNA.

Cabikey: Indo-Australasian Dacini Fruit Flies

It includes data on all valid species of Dacini found in the Oriental, Australasian and Pacific areas. It covers 507 valid species of Dacini with the exception of about 150 African non-pest species. All the 507 species are illustrated. A multiple entry key approach is designed as part of the program for easy navigation.

Cabikey: Mosquito Genera of the World

This CD-ROM is designed to enable identification and also as an information source to the genus level of all mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of the world. Two separate databases are included:

  1. Adult mosquitoes.
  2. Larvae.

In this database, you can use various characteristics like physical, geographic, head, thoracic, leg, wing, abdominal, siphon and combination features to identify mosquitoes.

CATLAB

CATLAB allows you to select and mate cats based on color, pattern and tail status, and to observe the extensive range of colors and patterns in the kittens produced. It will help you design experiments to understand the principles of genetics and gain practice in scientific reasoning and inquiry. The program requires a basic knowledge of Mendelian genetics and familiarity with the colors and patterns of domestic cats.

CIS Multinational Companies 2002- Chemicals and Petrochemicals

This CD-ROM is published by CIS Commercial Intelligence Service, a division of Business Monitor International Ltd. The information on the chemical and petrochemical companies includes Nationality, Products and Services (Chemicals and Petrochemicals), Business Activity Description, Number of Employees, Address, Country, Job Title.

You may perform combination searches using some of the above company data by clicking on the Search icon 9 in the menu bar.

Series of CD-ROMs for Plant Diseases

This series of plant disease CD-ROMs is presented by the American Phytopathological Society (APS), an international scientific organization devoted to the study of plant diseases and their control.

  1. Diseases of Cereal Grains
This CD-ROM comprises 712 images. The data fields for each image includes: Host (you can select more than one choice from barley, corn, rice, sorghum and wheat), Name (disease or injury or deficiency), Causes (pathogen or abiotic factor). You can also choose to search using the "type-in query" line.
  2. Diseases of Herbaceous Ornamentals and Roses
It comprises 535 images covering mainly diseases of chrysanthemum, rose, flowering plants (fungal diseases), flowering plants (other diseases) and foliage plants.
  3. Diseases of Legumes
This database contains 788 images on the diseases of alfalfa, bean, pea, peanut and soybean.
  4. Diseases of Small Fruits
This CD-ROM comprises 707 images on the diseases of blackberry, blueberry, cranberry, grape, raspberry and strawberry.

Focus on Genetics

This is an interactive simulation genetics database presented by EME Corporation. It has four programs:

  1. Introductory Genetics which includes Mendel’s Laws, monohybrid and dihybrid crosses with interactive Punnett square and probability activities, incomplete dominance, sex determination and sex linkage, random mating simulation develops genotype and phenotype ratios and breeding/inbreeding
  2. Kangasaurus-Transmission Genetics
  3. Karyotypes & Genetic Disorders
  4. Natural Selection which allows you to experiment with the effects of selection on gene frequencies, selection effects and pollution effects on a moth population.

Lumière Synchroton Light

Synchroton Light is an interactive and detailed introduction to the physics and technology of the generation of coherent radiation from accelerators with wide spread high-tech applications in science, medicine and engineering. It has multiple hypertexts links that permit an easy exploration of the CD-ROM.

The Physical World

This is a physics interactive multimedia database by The Open University with questions and answers. It comprises 3 series:

  1. Mechanics and the scale of the universe
  2. Electromagnetic fields & classical physics of matter
  3. Quantum physics

It is organized into 8 books:

  1. The restless universe
  2. Describing motion–covering different kinds of motion and their precise mathematical description
  3. Predicting motion–introducing Newton’s Laws of motion and the concept of force
  4. Classical physics of matter
  5. Static fields and potentials–covering gravitational, electric and magnetic fields
  6. Dynamic fields and waves
  7. Quantum physics
  8. Quantum physics of matter

T 305 Digital Communications CD-ROM

T305 is The Open University’s level 3 course on Digital Communications, produced by their Faculty of Technology. It is an interactive multimedia database with questions and answers. The CD-ROM is organized into 6 major blocks: 1) Representing systems–covering finite state machines, object-oriented models and specification, descriptive language on SDL 2) Synchronous digital hierarchy and probability & reliability 3) Sinusoids & Fourier series and information theory 4) Routing & switching and traffic theory 5) Channel coding, pulses & systems and modulation 6) Signal impairments.

Taxakey: Aphids on the World’s Crops

This CD-ROM has been designed to enable identification of the species level of the majority of aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) found on crops throughout the world.
