Reservoir of knowledge and experience at the NUS LibraryLim-Yeo Pin Pin, Central Library For the very first time, Library staff received their long service awards from the Librarian at our own annual function. Previously, NUS staff from various departments would attend long service award ceremonies conducted by the University's Office of Human Resources. This year, a total of 31 Library staff received their long service awards at the Marriott Hotel on 3 November. Twenty one of our non-academic staff will be rewarded for having worked 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years. Mr Choo Chan Wah and Mr David Wong Siew Yuen have have the honour of being the recipients of the 35-year long service award, the longest in this cohort.
Mr Choo started work in SU Library in 1965 as a campus attendant for 2 months. He then took on a typist position for 5 years before being appointed clerical officer. Currently, he holds the post of Management Support Officer Grade V. He has worked in Law Library, Cataloguing Dept and Circulation Dept in Central Library. He recalled that the pay of a campus attendant in 1965 was $133 a month.
David started work in the University of Singapore Library in 1965 as a campus attendant. He took up book binding courses at the former Baharuddin Vocational Institute and applied for the book binder position in the Library. David has enjoyed working with books, doing binding and repairs. In the professional staff category, ten staff are getting their awards for having worked 10, 15 and 20 years. Mrs Kim-Chew Ah Too, Mr Paul Tye and Mr Patrick Lye have the honour of being the recipients of the 20-year long service award. It is interesting to note that Miss Jill Quah will also receive an award for 35 years of service. Miss Quah joined the University of Singapore Library in 1965. If we add up all the years of service, these 31 staff would have worked a total of 595 years. This is a tremendous reservoir of knowledge and experience that helps us provide efficient services to our users.
