Reorganization of C J Koh Law Library
Loh Mee Lan, C J Koh Law Library
The Official Opening of the C J Koh Law Library will be held in February 2002,
after the extensive expansion and renovation which started in July 2000.
With the completion of the renovation work by the end of 2001, we took the opportunity to
reorganize our various library collections and services.
Library Services
We have made the following changes to our services:
- The main entrance to the library has been relocated to face the Faculty of Law car park and road. Users will now find it much easier to locate the library.
- The new Loan Counter is near the new entrance.
- An Information Desk has also been set up to enable library staff to serve our users more effectively. This Desk is located at the same area as the Loan Counter. The Information Desk will be manned for most of the library's operating hours.
- There will be study carrels (for Law postgraduate students) and an audio-visual room on the Second Storey. Access to this area is via the Reference Room, where the Current Periodicals, Reference and Singapore/Malaysia collections are shelved.
Collections
In consultation with the Law Faculty teaching staff,
we made some changes to the arrangement of the collections in the library.
Why Change?
We received feedback that our users get confused when locating materials in the library,
as materials from the same collection can be both loanable and non-loanable. For example,
the Main Shelves Collection consists of both books (which are loanable to NUS staff and
students) and serial publications (like yearbooks which are non-loanable). Users will
often take the items they want to borrow to the Loan Counter only to be disappointed when
they find that they are not for loan.
In addition, similar types of materials were also shelved on different floors.
For example, the law reports from United Kingdom and Commonwealth Collections were on one
floor whereas the reports from the United States Collection were found on another floor.
The following changes were made to our collections:
- The International Law Collection was "disbanded" and shelved separately into Legislation & Law Reports Collection (LW Main-B.Spot), Main Shelves Collection (LW Main Shelves) or Bound Periodicals Collection (LW Bnd Periodicals).
- The Main Shelves Collection, the Chinese Collection, the ASEAN Collection and the Bound Periodicals Collection are now located in the Basement.
- All legislation and law reports are now housed on the First Storey, that is, legislation and law reports from the former International Law Collection, United States Collection, United Kingdom and Commonwealth Collections (LW Main-B.Spot). They are ar
- The Current Periodicals Collection, the Reference Collection, the Singapore/Malaysia Collection are now housed in a separate room on the First Storey.
- We have also shifted some journals and law reports from the closed stacks to the library shelves. Please do remember to check LINC if you are uncertain of the location of any item that you require.
- The Singapore/Malaysia Collection, the Chinese Collection and the ASEAN Collection remain intact. These are special collections which include both books and serial publications.
We are very grateful for the patience and understanding of all library users during the
renovation period.
Please see the floor plans on the next page for details of the layout for the various collections.
