Refereed journals and indexing information

Have you ever been asked to verify whether the journal which carries your publication is a refereed journal? This information is available in Ulrich's On Disc which is found on CDROMs on Windows.

Ulrich's On Disc contains over 350,000 entries for journals published in more than 200 countries around the world. It also has indicators for over 19,000 refereed publications.

For example, to check if the journal Economic and Labour Relations Review is refereed.

To access Ulrich's on Disc

  1. If you do not have CDROMs on Windows, use the NUSNET Windows Shopping to buy CDROMs on Windows.
  2. Go to Start, Programs and select Ulrich Setup. You only need to do this once to set up the subdirectories for it to run.
  3. Go to Start, Programs and select Ulrich's on Disc.
  4. Click on Browse Index and type the title of the journal.
  5. Browse index in Ulrich on Disc

  6. Select from the list.
  7. Click on View Brief button to display the details of the journal.

To obtain a list of refereed journals for a subject

  1. Click on Search.
  2. Double-click on Subject, in the list on the left, and a new window appears. Type in your subject, select a term from the list and click on Add to search. For example, when you type Economics, it refers you to Business and Economics. Select the term and click on Add to search.
  3. At the search screen, click on the Search button.
  4. Double-click on Special Index, in the new window, select Refereed and click on Add to search.
  5. At the search screen, click on Search button.
  6. Type cs=1 and 2, to combine the two sets where 1 is for all journals with subject Business and Economics and 2 is for all refereed journals.
  7. Search in Ulrich on Disc

Besides finding journals in your subject area, Ulrich's on Disc can also give you the publisher contact information and even tell you which indexes cover the journal. For example, from the Ulrich record you now know that Economic and Labour Relations Review is indexed in Journal of Economic Literature (JEL). The online version of JEL is EconLit which is available on Digital Library, which you can search to find articles on your topic which are published in Economic and Labour Relations Review.
