PubMed and The Cochrane Library

Ong Hong Kiat, Medical Library

From January 2001, PubMed and The Cochrane Library replaces OVID Medline and OVID Evidence-based Medicine Reviews (EBMR) respectively.

PubMed

PubMed is a search service accessible on the Internet at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/.

It was developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

PubMed provides access to over 11 million citations in MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, HealthSTAR, publisher-supplied citations, and other related databases, with links via the Linkout feature to participating online journals.

It also provides access and links to the molecular biology databases available at NCBI. These databases contain DNA and protein sequences, 3-D protein structure data, population study data sets, and assemblies of complete genomes in an integrated system.

PubMed is a free service that is updated daily. In addition, it has a Related Article feature available with each citation that allows retrieval of other citations similar to it with just a mouse-click.

Unlike OVID Medline, staff and students who wish to access PubMed from their homes need not dialup to NUSNET. However, to access the full text of online journals subscribed by NUS Library via PubMed, dialup to NUSNET is still required.

The Cochrane Library

In OVID EBMR, the major component is the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR). In comparison, the Cochrane Library offers access to 6 databases: CDSR, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Cochrane Methodology Register (formerly called the Review Methodology Database), Health Technology Assessment Database and the National Health Service (NHS) Economic Evaluation Database. It helps users make well-informed decisions about health care.

The Medical Library subscribed to the standalone CDROM version of the Cochrane Library in 1998 and there are more details about Cochrane Library in the Linus January 1998 issue at http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg/linus/98jan/mdcd98.html

The Cochrane Library is available at http://www.cochranelibrary.com/clibhome/clib.htm.
Click on the Enter button; as no user name and password are needed. Type your search terms and the result list is shown.

Remember to use the Exit icon at the top of the screen to logoff and leave the Cochrane Library when you have finished your search. If you do not use Exit, the system will keep you logged on for 15 minutes, preventing others from accessing it.

Access via Digital Library

PubMed and the Cochrane Library are also accessible via Digital Library at http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg/digital/
