Lee Ching Seng, Chinese Library Head
The NUS Library is pleased to announce that Lat Pau
,
the first Chinese daily newspaper published in Singapore, will be available on the Internet for the
very first time sometime in January 2000. This historical newspaper can be accessed in two ways:
- LINC (http://linc.nus.edu.sg)
In LINC, you can search by the title and click on View the electronic version.
- Digital Library (http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg/digital/index.html)
In Digital Library, select Subscribed Titles under Ejournals and click on
Go. Click on Browse by Title on the NUS Library Ejournals Collection page.
Click on L and look for Lat Pau. You will then see a listing of this newspaper arranged by date. Select the
date required to view an image of the newspaper.
In phase two of the project, the titles of the articles will be indexed and made searchable together with the date.
Started by See Ewe Lay
(1851?-1906) who came from a wealthy and well-established
Straits-born family, Lat Pau began publication in December 1881
and lasted 52 years before it finally ceased publication
in March 1932, making it the longest running Chinese
daily during pre-war Singapore. Lat Pau is therefore
an invaluable historical source for research into
pre-war Singapore as well as Chinese overseas during
that period. Unfortunately, the earlier issues of the
newspaper were completely lost, and now the issues in extant
at the NUS Chinese Library cover only the period 19 August 1887 to 31 March 1932.
