  Q. How do I view journal articles which are in the .zip or .tar format?

Files which are in the .zip or .tar format will need to be uncompressed using programs such as WinZip.  WinZip is available via NUSNET from:

  • Windows Shopping (under 'Utilities')
  • WebShopping (under 'General Services')

Follow the instructions to install WinZip on your computer.

How to Unzip a file

  1. When you click on the hyperlink to the .zip file on your browser, you will be prompted to download the file.  Save the file to a temporary folder on your computer.
  2. Next, go to Start --> Programs --> WinZip to launch the program.
  3. In WinZip, click on the 'Open' icon
  4. Select the .zip file which you have downloaded.
  5. Click 'Open'
  6. The .zip file will be uncompressed into the original format.
  7. If you have the correct file extension associated with the uncompressed file (e.g. pdf files are associated with Acrobat Reader), you can double-click on the file to view it.

Follow the same instructions above to unzip a .tar file.
