  Q. How do I view patent images which are in the TIFF format?

Certain files such as the U.S. Patents full-text images available through the USPTO website are available in TIFF format.  They can be viewed using a TIFF viewer which can be downloaded from the Internet.

The TIFF image browser plug-ins are available for download from:

  1. InterneTIFF (for IE/Netscape)
    Free download.
  2. AlternaTIFF (for IE/Netscape)
    Free download.  Registration required.
  3. QuickTime (for Mac)
  4. Plugger (for LINUX)

Follow the instructions to install the plug-in on your computer.

How to view the TIFF image

  1. Search the USPTO database for the required patent grant or patent application.
  2. After locating the required patent information, click on the patent title or patent number to retrieve the patent details.
  3. Click on the 'Images' icon available at the top or bottom of the page.
  4. The full-text TIFF images will be automatically displayed in a viewer within your browser window.
