Q.  How can I be alerted to new journal articles in ScienceDirect?

ScienceDirect includes more than 2,000 journals from the publisher Elsevier Science.   Although the majority of journals in ScienceDirect are from science and medicine, other subjects such as economics, business and social sciences are also covered.

To use this service, you are required to register with the publisher to obtain your personal username and password.  This can be done by clicking the 'Register' button at the top of the ScienceDirect homepage.

After you have done the search, click the 'Save as Search Alert' button in the search results screen.

After inputting your username and password, you will be presented with a screen to input the name of the alert and to select the frequency of the alert.  You can choose to be alerted monthly, weekly, or daily. Click the 'save alert' button after you are done.

In ScienceDirect, you are also able to do a citation alert.  With a citation alert, you will be alerted whenever your favourite article is cited by another author.

  1. In the article display, click the 'Save as Citation Alert' button followed by your username and password.
  2. Input the name of your alert and select the alert frequency in the next screen.
  3. Click the 'save alert' button after you are done.

You can create up to a total of 10 alerts.
