The Nobel Prize is the first international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace (and since 1968, economics). However, Alfred Nobel’s will was incomplete concerning the area of literature – it simply stated that that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction."
It was also Nobel's express wish that in awarding the Prize, "no consideration shall be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive it, whether he be Scandinavian or not." (Abstracted from the Nobel e-Museum,

)
We present below the winners of the Nobel Prizes for Literature from the years 1990 to 2000, chosen by the Nobel Foundation in its efforts to interpret and fulfill the last words of Alfred Nobel, and a select list of their works available in the Library. Unless otherwise stated, all the books listed are located in the Central Library Main Shelves.
This list is also available in PDF format
(73KB).
