His Life and Works

1919	Born 24 May in London
	Joined the Observer as assistant to the chief Paris correspondent
1954 — 1956	Posted to Saigon; covered events in Indochina states
	Moved to Singapore as Chief Far East Correspondent of The Observer. Spent next 30 years covering events in Southeast Asian cities.
2005	Passed away on 14 June

Wrote fiction as well as non-fiction books on the region.
